I added sea foam yesterday and I thought that fixed it after driving on freeway. We had a frost last night. I drove this afternoon to town 15 miles with no problem until I came to a stop and the car started idling roughly and acted like it was going to die. Later it did and when I went to start it I had to floor the gas pedal and continue to push and rev up engine then while driving I had to keep putting it in neutral to keep it from dying. I got on the freeway and 1/2 way home the check engine light can on for a minute then shut off. I made it home another 5 min. of driving and started smelling fumes.
CHECK THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. You are describing a clogged converter. If the exhaust can't get out of the engine, the engine will stink like rotten eggs, or unburned fuel, or as in my '83 Tempo, burning oil—because it was ON FIRE under the hood. The fire went out after the road tar burned off the converter body, but a clogged converter generates very high temperatures.
And the CEL won't tell you you have a clogged converter.

SOURCE: Car wont idle, dies and shifts eratically
Hello;
It definetly sounds like a vacuum leak problem. The vacuum hoses are routed to perform various functions for the engine and transmission. They can be very difficult to track down. They are small diameter black hoses and start at the intake manifold (the source) and go to their respective locations.
They could be cracked, oil soaked, loose fitting, or disconnected to name a few problems to look for. Take it to a mechanic if you do not feel comfortable replacing the hoses.
Thanks;

When is the last time she had a tune up?
I would start there. Plugs, Wires, Distributor Cap and Rotor. Hope this helps you and thank you for using FixYa!
SOURCE: dies after warms up can't idle
I would check the idle air control valve, this is what controls the idle, when your foot is not on the throttle.
