1999 Dodge Stratus error code P1788

I've been told this is a transmission problem. What does error code P1788 mean? What needs to be done to repair this issue?

  • txphwtdh517 Apr 02, 2009

My 1999 Stratus hangs in second gear when having to drive it an extended distance, i.e. long 20 mph school zones. This trips the check engine light to come on & transmission hangs in second gear. Turning off the engine & restarting allows car to shift normal for a short period, but engine light stays on. Removing the Neg battery cable resets light to off & car acts normal for long periods of time (until the next low speed extended drive). Could the TCM be intermittent? I have no trouble unless driven at low speed for extended time. This is the 4 speed with optional manual shift.

This code sometimes comes up when the transmission is not shifting in overdrive.

Here is some research that I did and this is wut I found

This code is set whenever in any forward gear with engine speed above 1000 RPM shortly after a shift and every minute thereafter

After a shift into a forward gear, with engine speed > 1000 RPM, the TCM (Transmission Control Module) momentarily turns on element pressure to the clutch that don’t have pressure. For this to be activated, the switch must be closed in order for the circuitry to be completed. If the pressure switch does not close 2 times the code sets.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

RELATED DTC’S PRESENT
TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
INTERMITTENT WIRING AND CONNECTORS
TRANSMISSION CONTROL RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN
2/4 PRESSURE SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT OPEN
2/4 PRESSURE SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
2/4 PRESSURE SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
INTERNAL TRANSMISSION
TCM - 2/4 HYDRAULIC PRESSURE

My advice to u is get to someone who is experienced about this kind of technology in order for the problem to be rectified.

I have a 2005 Dodge Stratus error code P0700 when the light comes on it wont shift out of 2nd gear. Where is the sensor located?

Code 700 is a generic code that means there is a problem with the transmission control module. It could be the module, or something else causing the module not to work correctly.
You would need a scanner and a repair book to get the test procedure.

My 1999 dodge ram 1500 will not shift out of first gear

This could be a stuck valve in the transmission. Sometimes LUCAS TRANSMISSION treatment will help, but sometimes it is something needing repaired internally.

I have my friends '02 Dodge Caravan, it's showing 2 trouble codes on my scanner, P0700 and P0605. I've already changed the fluid and filter, no change. Switched out the Shift solenoid assembly...

Get it to a dealer or a trans shop and see if the tcm will communicate with a scan tool, the po700 dtc means it's strans code and the 605 normally means the tcm is shot! I see it more on sebrings then Neons but if it's the same engine and trans combo it's quite possible. If you drive it like that you can really damage the transmission so get it fixed asap.

I DID NOT SEE CODE P1788. BUT CODES P1775, P0732 , PO700 , YOU HAVE INTERNAL TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS TRANSMISSION SHOP HAS TO HOOK DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT TO CHECK TRANSMISSION PRESSURE SOLENOIDS AND SHIFT SOLENOIDS. TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY HAS MANY SOLENOIDS PRESSURE SWITCH AND SENSORS COST TOO MUCH REPLACE THEM ALL LET GARAGE SCANNED TRANSMISSION BE MUCH CHEAPER.

I need to locate the cam sensor for dodge stratus 3.0 2004 model

Please tell us your NOT replacing a cam sensor because someone told you to get a code read at some auto parts store. This is like the flu spreading on this site. Codes DO NOT always mean a sensor is bad. Test it before you throw parts at it.

Error Codes P0700 and P0605

0605 is for an Internal Control Module Read Only Memory (ROM) Error. This is typical of a malfunctioning computer. If the computer is bad, your retrieved codes are probably wrong anyway. May need to replace computer, drive, then see if if your check engine light returns.

1999 Dodge Stratus

If by "temp goes up in 3 to 5 minutes" you mean that's it overheating, then you have a problem.

If the water pump DOES need replacing, then it'll be leaking out of the front indicating it's wore out. So yes, replace it. 140k miles is plenty out of a water pump.

Other than that, there can be a multitude of problems. So please describe any other symptoms.

If the water pump is leaking, just be sure to keep at least water in the system until it's repaired, and that'll at least help it keep from overheating. I'd buy a few gallons of water to keep.

Just make sure you DO NOT let your car stay outside if it drops below freezing and you only have water in it. You'll bust something important for sure.
