Had valve cover gaskets removed & replaced because oil was leaking. Since having this done, (1) my car when starting keeps cutting off, (2) Trouble trying to go in reverse, (3) When in drive my car won't pick up speed correctly so I've been driving in D2. Before have work done my car ran great, great, great. Just you would smell oil burning, and it started smoking so it was determined I needed to have valve cover gaskets removed & replaced. Please help.
This is a combination of issues from whomever did the work..first, in order to remove the valve covers, all the hardware on top had to be removed, to include some vacuum equipment and hoses, and the shifter link arm on the drivers side of the firewall. if these hoses arent reconnected properly, the running of the car is effected, and if the shift link arm wasnt adjusted when reinstalled, it wont shift right at all.. if the folks who worked on it wont repair it for free(and you are allowed to watch them do it) then take your bill and the defunct car to another dealer garage who will make it right and charge the bill to the former garage..nothing gets my goat worse than someone who doesnt have a clue what they are doing to my car, thats why all my work is done by me, unless I cant do it myself..(which hasnt happened yet) if you know what you are doing, fixing the vacuum system hoses and such(using a diagram from the auto parts store,) will assist the running of the engine, the shifter adjust is eithewr up top on the steering column under the hood, or under the bottom at the transmission itself...put the car in park firmly and see where the shift arm(once loosened ) sets..adjust it to fit as its supposed to be and it should shift right with all gears present..good luck..
SOURCE: Can head gasket leak without the vehicle overheating?
It could be a cracked head or a cracked block too. You need to have a compression check done and analyze your fluids carefully.
SOURCE: Low coolant and oil smells like gas. No white/blue
let your car idle go back to the tail pipe if it seems to be steaming alot , and or smells like antifreeze then you have a head gasket problem or a gasket leak alowing in directly into your engine

What kind of engine? If it's a 3.0L Vulcan, you have to take off the upper and lower intake manifolds and you'll be able to take the valve covers off. There's a bunch to take off before you get to that point. The EGR Valve, Throttle body assembly, ignition coil pack, etc. Make sure you relieve the fuel system pressure (it might be behind the right side well cover of your trunk- disconnect that connection), and take off the negative battery terminal before begining work.

Also check to see if there is power in the start wire form the ignition switch, the wire is a white wire with pink stripe, most likely not a common problem, but still something that could go wrong. this wire will feed the starter relay under the hood...
