WHAT'S LEAKING? Is it the valve stem seals or piston rings???

Hi,

I've got a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. When I pulled the #1 and #5 spark plugs, they were covered in oil. Is it the valve stem seals or piston rings??? Is there a fast way to find out? What should I do? Can I just replace the heads?

Hi,
If it is the valve seals, you can replace the head, but it would be cheaper to replace the seals,If you pull the head, you can do a leak down test on the pistons to check the rings as well.

Valve stem seals are a LOT cheaper than a head. Either way, you have to pull the head off. I would go with the seals first. If that doesn't take care of the problem, you have a major job coming to replace the rings.

Can head gasket leak without the vehicle overheating?

If the oil on the spark plug was on the outside top of the plug, you probably have a leaky valve cover gasket. If your car has not been tuned up recently, you may be ready for a major tune-up and compression check. I would also check your dip stick if it's milky then you also have a bad head gasket.
