Retarding the timing will cool the combustion which will lower the Hydrocarbon number,it will run bad but after a passed e test put the timing back to an advanced state which may help with the stumble.

SOURCE: adjust timing on 1998 GMC K2500 pick up 5.7 liter

It has to be done with a scanner. You can adjust this distributor, but there are no timing marks to watch as you move it. There is a timing mark on the balancer and on the timing cover for referencing Top Dead Center #1 cylinder only, but it is only used for dropping the distributor in to get the engine up and running. A scanner is needed to properly adjust the timing. Connect the scanner and look for a data parameter labeled ‘cam offset’ or possibly ‘cam ******.’ It will be listed in degrees. Start the engine, and bring it up to 1500 rpm. Note the reading. If the timing specification is not within plus or minus two degrees of zero, you need to move the distributor. You can move the distributor with the engine running but the timing will not change. After you move the distributor, the ignition has to be cycled off to let the computer learn the new timing spec. Restart the engine, bring it up to 1500 rpm and see what the new spec is. You must repeat this procedure until you get the timing into the specification as mentioned above. Once you have it set to spec, the code should clear.

SOURCE: 1995 GMC JIMMY

I had a problem just like that on my blazer and it turned out to be the wire harness on the fuel injectors. It could also be your fuel injectors, had to replce mine at 85000

By module do you mean computer? There's nothing wrong with it. Yea, replace all ignition components with new ones. New cap, rotor, wires and spark plugs.

SOURCE: Misfires 96 gmc sierra 5.0

I suggest you have the injectors tested by the dealer, the sludge buildup will not cause a miss fire. to clean the throttle body use carberator spray while holding the engine idle high.

SOURCE: fails idle emissions test hc

High HC?
****** ignition timing....this will lower HC but raise other values during test.
Do you have room to increase other values?
After test return timing to the most advanced position without spark knock under load for best MPG.

1998 GMC Sierra vortex engine v6 4.3 knock sensor location

USA car or not in N.America at all??????????
which one is it, Sierra is a sub model class not a truck actual.
I will guess C1500????? pickup truck? 2wd./
scan the PCM yet, using any OBD2 scan tool for DTC errors?

it is not bad, 99% are not bad so no need to find it.
why not post a problem and not hunts.
the service manual on the car and google searches ends the hunt.

the knock sensor allows the PCM to tune spark timing to use poor grade fuel. and not allow knock and ping. it does that endlessly.
but if say you heard the engine ping, that is a dead EGR

PING (knock or detonation) is caused by poor fuel and crazy high combustion temps.
The EGR system cures it. (and must be cleaned or fails)
some trucks run spec cams that stop PING>
and some use those and a knock sensor..
it is a microphone ,sensor. and if engine bearings pound load

the KS1 sensor lies., to you. (and the PCM)
example rod knock or piston slap noises.

what truck is it,from USA 1998 list
1998 (sierra is a sub class not an actual truck) see?

the knock sensor
looks like OIL sender, or desk knob round.
newer 4.3L has 1 KS1, and KS2 sensors one per bank.
1998 , it is one, sensor, rear left of distributor.
left means (USA drivers left side) perspectives.

first google hit found it.

Did not pass emissions test for hydrocarbons

When was You're last Tune up?
Check the Spark Plugs to make sure the Gap is correct. HC is unburned fuel ,Check the Air filter and Replace as necessary,If coil over plugs Make sure to replace the Boots on the coils as they have a tendency to Bleed and wont show a trouble code.otherwise Change the Spark Plug Wires this should Clear You're Problem

Will start but wont run

get a spark tester ,this is only a basic test .check the coil for a spark if found remove the lead from the spark plug. plug in the tester. turn the engine over to test for a spark each time. if no spark found check and clean the contacts in your distributor cap and rotor arm then refit test for a spark. at the lead to the spark plug .if found now remove your plugs one at a time .smell for fuel .if found change the plugs.

Fail smog for high emission

you need to do a major tuneup !!!!!!! replace air & fuel filters, spark plugs & plug wires, distributor cap & rotor, replace OXYGEN SENSOR, change oil & filter, hopefully your catalitic converter is ok, if not , it should be replaced !!!!!!!!!!! together w/tuneup would be the best way to assure passing emissions !!!!!!!!

Not getting any spark with 1998 Suburban K2500 5.7 Had an issue with the battery the other day. Died on me in a parking lot. Tried jumping but would not start. Put a new battery in the next day and all...

Check the Ignition Control Module. Usually these are mounted in the base of the distributor - the distributor wire harness plugs into it. If you already changed that, then I would have the ECM ( Engine Control Module ) tested. I really hope it is the ICM - they are much cheaper than the ECM!!
Good luck and I hope this helps!!
