1998 Chevy Suburban radio troubles...

Just purchased a 1998 Chevy Suburban.. The radio worked fine when I got it now it does work right.. The radio when truned on will sound like it is going to play but it never does. It just is lit up and all the buttons and things work but no sound.. Can any one tell me how to fix this.. I have replace the radio the cd player even the box that the radio connects to.. Not sure if a fuse could be the problem have not checked.. BTW when I try to lock the doors with my hand held door they all lock except the driver side passenger one.. Could this be connected as far as fuses or wiring just a thought..

It was replaced with a Radio, CD player & Amp from a 1999 Chevy Truck same Radio System & Cd.. All the functions lights & every thing works just no souind.. Mute I don't think that is it. Because it comes on then & goes off with out touching any buttons.. I hope this told you what info you was needing we allso change the 3 other boxes that the radio was connected to and still no luck.. I can not think what they was I just I no one was the Amp, one was the black box with Purple, Blue & Brown on it I believe for some wiring to be connected.. another was a little black box with three prongs on it.. & I am not sure what the other box was but it was with the radio connections.. The connection Boxes come from another Suburban but the Radio Cd & black box with the color coded wiring plug ins come from the 1999 pickup.. The amp was different than the Suburbans was.. A model number on the Amp not in use tight now is 16218461.. Hope this helps..

    Thanks in advance ok..

Hi Janie,

If the radio powers up, it's not a fuse problem. At least not with the radio itself. The door locks are most likely unrelated. We can address them separately. One thing at a time though.

My first suggestion would be to check for an engaged mute option. If that isn't it, my 2nd choice is the box that you mentioned, that the radio connects to. That is what is drawing my attention.

However I need to know more.

A bit of Question and Answer is needed to help you out. Just comment me back with the answers. OK?

  1. Make/Model of the replacement radio
  2. Make/Model of the CD player
  3. Make/Model/Nature of the box the radio connects to. Is it an Amplifier? What is it?
  4. Do all the components power up when the radio does?
  5. When you try to play a CD, does it go through the motions, just with no sound?
Get back to me and we'll get you fixed up

    Hello again,

It sounds like the CD player is connected to the radio through the antenna using an RF converter. Then you would Set the radio to a station on the low end of the dial to pick up the CD signal. There would likely be a separate controller too.

    Which leaves the Amplifier.
Since this happens without touching it we are looking for a loose connection, an intermittent contact.

    • Look for loose wiring at the Amplifier

    • Check for a blue wire coming from the radio to the Amplifier, make sure both ends are secure.

    • Check on the power source to the Amplifier, normally would be red, on a connector labeled +12v. Trace the wire to it's source. Make sure the connections are good.

    • Check the Ground on the Amp. Normally a black wire. Check the connections.
Another way of going about it is:

    • Try to get the sound on.

    • Then one by one, give each wire a jiggle,

    • First on the Amp, then the radio.

    • When the sound quits, that should be the wire to check.
Let me know how it goes.

That's good news. Glad to hear it.

I'd like to thank you for taking the time to rate. However, I have a what may seem like a strange request. I have and try to maintain a high rating. As weird as it seems, on a rating over 90%, a Helpful rating lowers the score and is actually hurtful.

There was no way you could have known this. The overall ratings we maintain are really the only compensation we get for volunteering our time. So my request is if I wasn't instrumental in fixing your problem (deserving a FixYa rating) then not rating is much better as not being rated has no effect on the overall rating.

Thanks for your time and thank you for not rating! ( : lol.

1998 Chevy Suburban - service 4wd light comes on after running 4x4 for 2 mins

Well it could be the selector switch, but I doubt it.
Generally, the service light means something is not working that the computer controls. Solenoids and valves are a couple of possibilities.
The transfer case is shifted by solenoids commanded by the body computer based on the switch position on the dash.
You should be able to have a shop scan the body computer for trouble codes and proceed from there.
A basic code reader may not access the body computer.

Rear door speakers don't work w/ aftermarket radio in 94 suburban

You need to attach the blue wire on the stereo harness to the blue and white wire on the car adapter harness. they installed a small amplifier to power the rear door speakers and unless you connect those two wires then the speakers will not work.
