You didn't say if it is a auto or manual transmission; also what engine you have? On my wifes Honda Accord V6, just drain fluid and re-fill. This will not empty the Torque Converter but what I did was do the drain and re-fill then let her drive until next oil change (3000 miles) and do it again. Hope this helps,
P. Ford

Transmission fluid

Transmission fluid should be checked with the engine warmed up and running in Park. The dipstick is always near the back of the engine bay, and is VERY long when you pull it out. Transmission fluid should be red. It should not be brown.
Changing transmission fluid is much more difficult than changing engine oil. Engine oil can be changed by removing a plug and draining it out. Transmission oil can only be changed by removing brackets, removing the pan (think of a shallow oven pan bolted to the bottom of the transmission) and letting all the fluid drain out. A transmission fluid change should ALWAYS include a new filter and gasket as well. This is one best left to a shop with the proper tools.

A mechanic I used to take my car to told me that I didn't have to change the transmission fluid in my 2005 Chevy Cavalier. I have doubts as to whether this is true or not. When it runs, it sounds a bit...

These vehicles do require transmission fluid changes, but at a higher mileage. In fact some models come without a transmission fluid dipstick to check the level. It is recommended that when transmission fluid change service is performed, that a fluid evacuation/fill machine be used, commonly known as a transmission flush.

Is is appropriate and/or necessary to change the transmission fluid on a Toyota Tundra 2004 that has 108,000 miles?

If your automatic transmission fluid has not previously been changed, it would be a good idea to change the fluid at this point. With 100,000 miles on the transmission, it would also be a good time to drop the transmission pan and change the internal filter, too. That's a messy job, and one that I have started paying people to do--good thing you only do it about every 75,000-100,000 miles.

Ordinarily, it's a pretty good idea to change the transmission fluid every 50-60,000 miles, especially if you do a lot of start and stop driving or especially if you use your vehicle to tow anything. Fresh transmission fluid will probably help your truck shift a bit more smoothly. More importantly, the fresh dose of lubricants and the like will reduce wear on the transmission bands. I'd rather change my fluid more often than have to rebuild my transmission. With proper maintenance, though, your transmission should last well past 150,000 miles; I've seen Toyota transmissions with well over 200,000 miles on them with fluid changes as their only maintenance. Some have made it close to 300,000 miles with only fluid and filter changes, but I wouldn't count on that for the average transmission.

What is the recommended millage for a transmission flush

Transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles, or more frequently if the vehicle is used for towing or carrying heavy loads.

When replacing the transmission fluid, first the mechanic drives the vehicle to get the fluid warm and then removes the drain plug at the bottom of the transmission (if applicable), or removes the transmission pan allowing the fluid to drain.

The transmission is then filled with fresh fluid, and the engine is started. With the engine running and the transmission in "Park," the mechanic checks the level of the transmission fluid on the dipstick. Then the vehicle is driven once more, and the fluid level rechecked; if needed, more fluid is added.

Using the wrong automatic transmission fluid may invalidate the manufacturer's warranty and affect the shift characteristics of the transmission. Consult the owner's manual for information on the kind of fluid to use.

Many automatic transmissions have a filter that can be replaced when changing the transmission fluid. Changing this filter may allow a closer examination of the fluid for debris, which may be a sign that the transmission is about to fail.

Hope this helps.

The transmission seems to slip when going in reverse in my Ford Explorer 1994 (OK going forward). Transmission fluid is OK.

have one myself w/over 400.000 miles suggest you change transmission fluid and filter, just add lucas transmission treatment to your fluid change. never had problems w.mine. but firm beleiver in lucas oil and transmission and fuel treatments. just trying to see how far i can go w/mine. the lucas treatment added to your fluid and transmission fluid and filter change frees up stuck valves in the transmission. sounds alot like you may have a stuck valve body in the transmission to me.pull your transmission fluid dip stick, this is going to sound strange but go with me for a second please, does the fluid smell burnt? do'nt be scared to put it on your finger and sniff it. if it smells like burnt expletitive, then it needs replaced and filter too. just please add lucas transmission treatment to your fluid change, you will not regret it. the treatment [lucas] will cost an extra $11.00 onto the fluid change, trust me, you will not regret it!fluid changes are a must for ford explorers 4x4 don't know why,but they demand baby formula. lucas,i've found is that formula. thank you for choosing fixya.com we are here 24/7 for you 7days

Transmission fluid

you should change your fluid at or around every 100,000 miles. also look into changing the transmission filter when you change the fluid. IMPORTANT: if you are having transmission problems like a slipping gear of lack of gear, DO NOT change the fluid as it will most likely free up whatever is making your transmission work currently. take it to aamco and have them diagnose it, only if you are having trouble, otherwise changing the tranny fluid is something you can easily do in your driveway or garage.
