Most likely has to come out & apart to find the problem It is a transaxle with ten years on it,some don't last a long time,can't go by mileage & if the fluid was never changed since new it's done.
Hi just replaced water pump, timing chain and plugs. 1st initial test proved that timing was off. 2nd attempt re-aligned chain and now dashboard is displaying check engine and VOC. I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima
What you need to check is the transmission release bearing because if there is a clearance on the release bearing you will encounter this problem and also check the transmission oil.
do not flush the trans, that will make it worse.
My friend you have no second gear, you need trans rebuilt.
If you flush it now you can cause more damage.
