Jan 22, 2009 - have a 1993 dodge dakota sport that wont start. when you turn the key on there is no power to the fuel pump and does not fire. any ideas ... I just bought a1990 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 5-Speed, there is only one problem, it only .... I went to move it the other day, it would turn over, but had no spark or gas.
Pull out the auto shutdown relay. Try substituting another relay thst is not needed to run the engine, such as the horn relay. If that works, replace the relay. If not, probe the relay socket with a volt/ohmmeter. With the meter set to vdc, connect the black lead to body ground and probe the socket. Thete shou.d be one hot terminal with the key off and two hot terminals with the key on or turned to start. If those are good, leave your red probe in the terminal that is hot with the key on, keep yhe key on, and probe the other two terminals with your black lead. One of those terminals should read battery voltage, as it is the ground signal from the pcm. The other terminal should also show some voltzge, as it goes to the coil and other loads. After running these tests, let me know the rexults and I will try to diagnose.
Check the Auto Shutdown Relay (ASD) in engine power distribution box (left inner fender-under hood)
You should hear fuel pump for 15 sec after you turn on key
a clogged fuel system? check the fuel filter, fuel pump...try to start at full throttle opened. Your carb might need cleaning. Check also the ignition system.
Check at tank fuel pump connector for power. If you have power to the pump and do not hear it running you will need to replace fuel pump. If no power, check the fuel pump relay.
turn the key to the on position a see if you can here a buzzing sound around the fuel tank,if you don't hear a sound then. (be very careful while doing this) with the key off take a fuel line coming from the tank loose, make sure its pointed away from you and turn the key to the on position, see if any gas comes out,if not then your fuel pump is probably bad.
