It has a new engine,i replaced the carb and it still does this.it will run and idle fine, then it makes a click and it will start to load up and act like it's going to die or will die.you never no when it's going to do it.thanks help!!!!!
Have u checked to see if the EGR valve is leaking? do this by wetting your finger and touching the valve at idle, if the water sizzles the valve is leaking, this is a common cause of such idle stalls.
Check Your Oxygen Sensors They Engine May Be Over Compensating Due To One Being Bad. Try Removing Them One At A Time If There Is Only One And Seeing If The Problem Still Persists.
Fuel pump ,fuel filter and fuel relay.three possibilities it can be.just check out all the three.
Hard to say... could very well be your fuel relay and that's the click you hear....the relay would be in the fuse box located in the engine compartment near the battery... other opton would be the ignition relay.

It is possibly the Overdrive Selinoid locatied within the transmission. It's malfunction prevents the transmission from downshifting, thus at low speeds the engin lugs and dies.
or the
the planetary gears are locking up . your trans case could be getting hot ,over heating the or your car could need flushing. this is serious i wouldnt drive until it is fixed
What do you mean by load up?
Can you drive it at all?
Where did you get the engine?
Is the transmission a match to this engine?
Hoping at least you can drive it.
This sounds like it may be as simple as cleaning the water or gunk out of the gas tank. The clicking is baffling but:
If your fuel is contaminated with gunk, grime, water and stuff it could cause the racing.....Fill the tank with High Test, Add some dry gas and a good fuel system cleaner or 2 or 3 and this might dissolve all the gunk!
If this cures the problem never let your gas tank get below 1/4 and especially never run it to empty as this is when the gunk and/or water will enter the system!
Hope this helps!
Good Luck!

Have you checked to see if it is the ac compressor engadging,(this can be done by watching the inside section on the pulley,if it starts turning with the click,it is engadging)or the alternator(when it senses a load it engadges)
if not either, please give more details

i'm not sure what the clicking would be right before it happens that would be caused by the timing or fuel.it runs perfect up to this point.thanks
thanks ,but it doesn't have ac.i replaced the idle speed selinoid also.it runs good ,idle's and seems fine then it starts to idle rough, smells and sounds like it's flooding it's self and normally dies.after it does die it will start right back up and run on down the road.it never does it going down the road, always while sitting still or slowing for a stop.thanks
by loading up i mean it's acts like it's flooding or getting to much fuel.yes i can drive it anywhere.the engine was a new long block when i bought it but not sure where it came from.the transmission is the orignal 5 speed.thanks
i don't have any problem down shifting and it does it whn sitting still.i'm not sure what the planetary gears are that your talking about thanks
this is on a 1988 jeep wrangler.i probably posted it on the wrong site.it doesn't have a fuse panel or box by the battery.thanks
the fuel pump and filter are new also.where is the relay on a 1988 jeep wrangler 4.2. thanks
ok i checked the oxygen sensor and it's ok.please remember this is a 1988 jeep wrangler with a 4.2 6cylinder.it is carburated.it does not have a fuel relay and only one oxygen sensor.thanks
