99 miata 1.8L will not start

Just rebuilt the Motor. Double checked all the sensors, everything is seated correctly. Plugs are on in the correct order. Tried to get timing set correctly following online suggestions. They said to turn the the crank to TDC the line up the cam Exhaust: with the E straight up and the I facing the the I located on the back plate. The Intake: with the I facing up and the E facing the E on the back plate. Set the timing belt, engine will turn over but still sounds like blow back from the cylinders through the intake. I think that the timing is still off. Please let me know what the correct ignition sequence is and if the timing setting marks are the correct way to set it. Or is there another method.

SOURCE: Torque and sequence to Intake Manifold for 3.3L Nissan Xterra 2000

Hi El Faraon,
I believe that you're dealing with 12 mm bolts and nuts....THESE ARE NOT THE SPECS FOR YOUR ENGINE, but I believe that if you use them you'll be close....Tighten in three stages up to 22nm....choose the bolts from the centre of the manifold and circle outwards until you reach the last one.....It may be a good idea to draw an overhead or plan view of the unit, marking out the bolt positions.....Start at the centre and mark the sequence and follow that....What is important is starting at the centre, so that nothing becomes warped....

Hope this helps,

Regards, Johngee10

Well you have good compression so your cylinders are OK.
I cannot help you with the vacuum hoses, but, try and plug them because if they are sucking air they will make the mixture weak and that will cause the engine to run badly.
To be honest if it is rocking about as much as you say then I would suggest it is only running on three cylinders. If you are happy with the sparkplugs and HT leads then it has to be a fuel problem, the injector with the broken plastic part? are you sure its operating correctly?

The keyway and or the dot on the crank should be line at 12 oclock. You will see a point on the oil pump housing to go by. On the camshaft the pointer will be at 12 oclock also. Use the O on the camshaft to the top at mark. Be sure to look at the dist. roter to make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. I could get 180 out of time. If you do it right it should start up right away. then you can use a timing light to finish it.

Mazda problems

If the spark is there and you have fuel, then it's time to pull the covers and check the timing belt had not slipped a tooth or two. This can happen if the tensioner is loose or old. Idler bearings can jam and cause belt slips. "..hearing belt noises" is not good, but is the clue I think. Realign everything and see if it starts. If there's obvious damage to the cam shaft sensor, you'll need to replace it. Look on rockauto.com for parts.

Pull a plug wire and test for spark. May help identify a cam position sensor which is 100% required to run. They go out often enough for ships to stock them. You can pull all of the plugs and do a compression test to help confirm likely hood of the belt being correct.

Lancer timing

-Try one more time. When pull out the plug, make sure ground it.
If there is spark shown. It could be the rotor point to the wrong cylinder plug wire.

Make sure all your wires and connections are correct. Make sure everything is put back on. If everything is, it may be a cam sensor, crank sensor, ? Double check everything.

Do you have spark at the plug end of the plug wires?Have you double checked the firing order is correct? If you are sure it is correct 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 ,then you will need to check the ignition timing,if that seems good then you may have to get into it a little and check the cam /valve timing..Hope this helps !

I would check to make sure you have the spark plug wires on the right plugs. I would also check to make sure they gave you the correct plugs and plug gap. Also check to see if the wires are connected or snapped to the plug, sometimes it's a bit hard to get the boot and connector seated on the plugs.

I am trying to start my 1980 gm 350 in my boat. engine will turn and have new fuel and filters. Pulled off coil wire and got spark, grounded a spark plug to the manifold and got spark. What could it be?...

definitely a fuel issue. be sure to check that the distributor isnt 180 degrees off. you say it'll start when you pour some fuel into the carb, it sounds like you arent getting enough fuel then. try adjusting the float level higher so that more fuel will be pumped through. and how old is the carb? has it been rebuilt recently? make sure the jets are clean and adjusted properly. make sure none of the mixture screws are bottomed out. it sounds like it's all the quadrajet's fault on this one!

No spark at plugs

Is there power to the power packs. If not trouble shoot backward from there. Check the plugs on your: crank angle sensor, the cam sensor and the clutch switch. Another problem could be fuel, if the brain doesn't sense the flow of fuel it won't send a spark to the power packs.

Also check the 2003 forum at miata.net there is a world of knowledge over there about Miatas and MX5s
