PLACES LIKE AUTOZONE HAVE LOANER TOOLS. YOU NEED A RADIATOR PRESSURE SYSTEM TESTER. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO PUT THE COOLING SYSTEM UNDER PRESSURE TO CHECK FOR LEAKS. IF YOU WANT TO SEE IF IT IS PLUGGED USE A LASER TEMP GUN AND CHECK FOR A 20-30 DEGREE CHANGE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

Theres a tool you buy ,it has a cap with a hose and gauge attached, you can use it to check the whole cooling system or if you take the radiator hoses off and plug the open ends of the radiator you can check just the radiator by it's self.but leaving it all hooked together is best,it will be full of coolant and easier to spot the leak

New radiator cap, now engine over heating - subaru forester 2004

If the engine was stopped or you shut it down immediately then the possibility of damage would be remote as the piston would not be continuing to move which is where most damage occurs.. If the radiator failed a pressure test then the problem is that the radiator pressure was not high enough to prevent the boil. I will explain . Water boils at 100degrees c at 14psi (air pressure). When under pressure the boiling point goes up to well above the 100 degrees . If you have a coolant system leak the pressure will be at air pressure and when the engine is stopped the hot parts have not water circulation so the temperature goes well over the 100 degrees and so it blows off . 2 problems are present that you have to correct. Find the leak and have it fixed and secondly check that the cooling fans are working correctly. Caps come in varied pressure ratings for the radiator construction so check that the cap reading is suitable for you vehicle

I have a 2004 ford explorer that overheated and it was leaking something is it my water pump or radiator

Could be either. Or it could be a hose. Take to any radiator shop and have your system pressure checked. If no radiator shop in your area, take to a trusted repair shop and ask them to do a pressure test for you. A pressure test is a device you put on your radiator in place of the cap. They are then able to pump up the pressure and visually check for leaks.

Cooling system overheats and pumps coolant out expansion tank

You will need to start by doing a radiator pressure test using a radiator pressure tester first verify that the fans are coming on when it gets hot if so then you will need to pressure test it find out where the leak is if there is no apparent leak but the pressure drops fast could indicate a bad head gasket. You can verify that by doing a compression test or a chemical test
