SOURCE: CAR SOMETIMES WONT START

you are having a fuel delivery problem...and it could be caused by numerous things...such as a bad fuel pump, a bad cold sensor or warm up injector.  You haven't attempted to  solve any of these suspected faults...so take it to a mechanic for repair

SOURCE: 1986 Volvo 240 starts but will die when I increase the RPMs

My 88 240 has a bad connection where the fuel pump relay plugs in , when the relay gets jostled the car dies. If I jam all the wires back into the plastic fitting it runs fine for a while.

SOURCE: 1997 Volvo 850- It doesn't get gas when it idles.

Hi!

Sounds to me like the engine in fact is getting gas when idleing, but not getting enough air. Therefore my 2 cents are on you IACV (Idle Air Controller Valve). It's a small steel cylinder suspended in a rubber piece on the front of your throttle body, and its job is to supply the engine with air when idleing. This is a necessity since the throttle body valve is closed when the gas pedal isn't pressed. Take out the IACV and clean it thoroughly, also make sure that the air going from it is not hindered by any gunk or deposits on its way to the intake manifold.
(You could have someone hold their hand on the IACV when you take your foot of the gas pedal. If nothing happens it's probably dead or stuck. If something does happen there is still a chance that the air is hindered somewhere).

Good luck, let us know if this didn't help!

SOURCE: I have a 1994 Volvo

Spray some gum out in air flow sensor and see if it starts up.
If it does you need a new fuel pump. To confirm look for schrater valve on fuel rail, put a rag around it and wear eye protection. Push valve and see if fuel shots out while the vehicle IS NOT RUNNING. I fuel does not shoot out you have no residual pressure and need a new pump.
The other thing is to place key in ignition and put it to on position you shoulsd hear a buzzing sound from pump.

A weak battery will not spin the engine fast enough to start it. Replace the battery and make sure that all of the connections are clean and tight especially in cold weather.

Ford thunderbird wont start in Cold weather

change distributor cap first and see how it goes could have a crack in it.Failing which you need to test the ignition module when its cold as sometimes a component will break down and not work when its cold ,this is very much a hands on type job so if dist cap doesnt cure it call a mobile mechanic

Acts like its running out of gas, raw gas smell

this suggests you have a fuel leak in the engine compartment. Possibly a leaking fuel manifold (injection rail), or the rubber line from the fuel tank is leaking where it attaches to the manifold. The fuel line to the cold start injector should also be checked. Rubber hoses on older cars become brittle and as they contract from very cold weather will leak. Turn the key to on for 1 minute but do not start the car. Then check under the hood for a raw fuel wet spot where the leak is.

Car turns over but won't start

one thing you need to remember.... as it gets colder (that's not cold yet) the battery gets less efficient as the demand for more power increases with the starter. were you able to start it by boosting it.... also what weight motor oil is in it. 30 to 50 weight oil turns to the consistency of molasses in cold weather.
