In the morning when engine is cold it does not jerk when shifting from gear 1 to gear 2 but as it runs in city for a while. It starts jerking and it only happens when when the automatic transmission shifts from gear 1 to gear 2. I have recently changed the transmission oil and car has millage of 72 K miles

Don't know if this will be of any help, but these cars have the same auto trans as the Mada 626s of the same age and they are a problematic transmission. They tend to blow up. Gerking could just mean it needs a service. ie: low fluid levels or 'worn out' fluid. It could also be an early sign of bigger problems.
We ended up selling our mazda because of the transmission. around $1800 to replace with reco but many people reporting reco trans failing within 2 yrs anyway.

Unless you are low on fluid, I suspect you are in need of a rebuild. I have had similar problems before. Any shop will tell you to try a fluid and filter change. It has never brought one of mine back. I would suggest adding fluid to the top of the 'add fluid' area of the dipstick and no more. It can foam if it is to full, causing similar problems as being to low. I would add that if you have to replace the transmission - you need to consider that the car may not be worth the cost.
Good Luck.

well.. I have the exact same problem and I am still trying to figure out what is causing it. So far I've tried: new spark plugs, fuel injectors, cam/crank sensors, ignition control module (I think.. my brother did the work). If you figure it out before you get rid of the hunk of junk let me know. I like not having a car payment and the gas mileage is better than my Jeep. =] btw - I will never buy a Ford again, while dealing with the herky jerky problem. I have also had the following go wrong: ignition wouldnt turn, clutch went out, and the trunk latch is on the fritz.

The transmission fluid is ok, no burning smell.
