My mechanic tells me I need a new interlock shift in my 2002 GMC Envoy. On ocassion, I need to pump my brakes a few times before I am able to move my gear from park to drive. The shifter is cheap but the labor takes 3 hours and is very expensive. Assuming the shifter needs replacing, will an old shifter get so bad to the point of being unable to move the gear?

Before any parts are replaced, it needs to be determined if the brake pedal switch is being actuated properly and functioning properly. After that, the interlock solenoid needs to be checked, as well as the linkage.

The first problem that I see is.....

You got screwed, the rear brake shoes and the parking brake shoes and the same thing. The parking brake uses your back brake pads to set the brake.

SOURCE: 2002 GMC Envoy Brake Lights Don't Work

It involves a little tricky manouvering under the dash to reach the switch and you need to be very aware of the orientation when fitting. PLEASE BE AWARE that you are messing with the brake pedal and if you fit this part incorrectly you could interfere with the brake pedal travel and cause a dangerous driving situation. Only fit this part once you have fully inspected the part to be removed, and preferably look at a workshop diagram. Some switches are easy some are not. Most take me 10-15 mins.

SOURCE: My 2002 GMC Envoy is stuck in the neutral position

i would try to get down to the linkage adjustment and see if maybe it is not adjusted properly or if it jumped out of alignment. Place the transmission in park and the selector in park after loosening nut and then tighten down the nut.

The gear shift in my envoy 2002 is locked on d...what will i do?

Your vehicle has a shift interlock feature. When you press on the brake pedal a solenoid pulls a locking pin out of the way so you can shift out of park. First, check the fuse for the shift interlock solenoid. If that's good, either the brake pedal switch or the solenoid is bad. In the meantime, pull out your owner's manual and read up on how to bypass the interlock. There's a manual way to do it to get you started until you can get it fixed.

2005 GMC ENVOY Gear Shifter won't move, why and how do I fix the problem?

I am assuming the shifter will not move out of Park (you don't mention it). The shift interlock is not working. Thing you can do is turn ignition key little, but just before ignition comes on, and try to move shifter to N. At this stage you can start the engine and shift to D. This is a temporary solution to allow you drive the vehicle to a repair facility. If you are successful, it is the interlock solenoid that needs to be checked out.

Key stuck in 2004 gmc envoy and car will not start

make sure battery is 12.6 volts. if not you not going to be able to get transmission go all the way in park to remove ignition key.when you press brake pedal it energize brake transmission shift interlock to get transmission all way in park to remove ignition key.if all is good battery is 12.6 volts.sound like ignition switch lock cylinder broken more likely.

Shift interlock won't release on my 2002 GMC Envoy, are there broken wires near the shifter that are causing the problem not allowing key removal from the ignition

No, its not broken wires, its a pin in the shifter thats out but you need to visit a mechanic unless you know how to open the shifter assembly.

The shift stick stuck on park , found the fuse burned , but it is happening many times , especially when filling gas , what is the reason ?

all vehciles have what's called brake-shift interlock. It means you have to step on the brake pedal to get the car out of park.
A solenoid is de-energized to allow you to move the shift lever.
You may have a bad solenoid or a short circuit. Check first to make sure there aren't other items using the same fuse too.

My Nissan Sentra 2002 automatic wont move from Park to Drive at first. It can take a couple of minutes before I can shift gear, and sometimes I restart the engine several times to get it to go. It gets...

the problem is the park interlock safety mechanism is sticking,( keeps u from shifting out of park unless the brake is pressed) it has nohing to do with restarting the engine several times. Check and verify the brake lights work is the first thing to do.

Brake problem

Switch on brake pedal stuck due to dust etc. Many new cars have a safety feature that allow the brake-lights to come on if the brake lever is depressed, even when the ignition is switched off.
If you can get to the switch, a good cleaning with methylated spirits and a small brush should allow it to move freely again. Good luck.
