My car 1992 Buick Century has white smoke coming from the front of the engine? Last week it was smoking and I brought it to the mechanic and he put it on the lift and said he didn't see anything

I had him do an oil change and check all the fluids, and he hosed down the engine; I think with a cleaning solution. The smoke is very white, but it smells like something is burning and i am afraid to drive it. I don't know where the temperature gauge is on my dashboard so i cannot see if the car is overheating, but the car feels very hot after about running the engine for about 5 minutes.

White smoke is usually steam, you either have a bad radiator cap or a hose with a hole in it.

SOURCE: Changed spark plugs in 97 buick lasabre and now it

You need to check the oil with the dipstick (wipe in down a few times) to see if it looks like a chockalate milk shake. If coolent has made its way into the oil you have blown head gasket. The fuel pump which is usually in the gas tank in most gm vehicles would not cause white smoke, if it failed you car would not start because your engine would not get any gas to the injectors

SOURCE: 2003 buick century won't start. Ignition

Just because the battery has enough power to operate the lights and door locks does not mean it would pass a load test. If the battery checks out OK then check the battery cables. use one side of a pair of jumper cables to bypass each cable starting with the negative cable. if the vehicle now starts, replace the cable. The positive cable is harder to check using this method. attach one end of the jumper cable to the starter terminal making sure that the end of the jumper cable is not touching the engine and then attach the other end to the positive terminal of the battery. If sparking occurs when this end is connected then the jumper cable is touching ground and must be repositioned. If the problem still exists then the most likely cause is the starter solenoid. Always wear safety glasses when working around a battery.

SOURCE: 1990 Buick Regal overheating

You have leaking engine cylinder head gaskets, this may be the cause of the overheating or a result of it, replace the head gaskets and have the radiator cleaned by a by a radiator repair shop, that should cure the problems.

SOURCE: 1992 buick park avenue 3.8 smokes badly on start up and 5 minutes after

When this happen's it can break ring on a piston and if your lucky it will just cause some rings to stick if it breaks it can scare the cylinder wall then that is a major rebuilt not overhaul or just replace rings.Johnny

97 es 300 car runs great stopped at store 30 min when restarted heavy white smoke

White smoke means water is getting into the engine from teh coolant system. Likely that your engine cylinder head has a crack, or head gasket is bad

White smoke coming out of tailpipe when starting what could it be?

The white smoke is most likely burning antifreeze due to a blown head gasket. The oxygen sensor code is most likely an oxygen sensor that has been destroyed by the anyifreeze. Replacing the oxygen sensor will not do any good until the problem with the engine is fixed. The trans code is anybody's guess because there are probably 50 different transmission codes possible and you did not mention which one you are getting.

I have a 2002 Buick Century and soon after I start it white smoke comes out of the exhuast pipe. I don't believe coolant is getting in to the oil, so I was just wondering if I can keep driving the car...

If the white smoke comes out for 15 to 30 seconds your engine is ok. Condensation does build up inside the engine and as well as the exhaust and will burn out in that amount of time. If the white smoke is continuely extracted from the exhaust pipe you do have coolant leaking through the head gasket

Using BIO-Fuels can often reduce the smoke emissions which will help passing any tests.

You can locate bio-fuels near yourself using google.

Car is smoking on start up, a lot of white smoke

If the engine is using oil then first remove the dipstick and run the engine, check to see if heavy smoke is coming out of the tube, this would indicate worn piston rings,if it is not so dense, yet you are using oil and it smokes bad from the exhaust, then its likely the valve seals are worn. either way, unless you have mechanical knowledge, tools etc , you need to take it to a mechanic for the engine repairs or live with the oil consumption. There are no quick fixes for engine wear.

Hi Maria,

Does the white smoke occur at start up then go away?
Was it cooler out the night before the white smoke started?

Likely it's condensation burning off.

To be on the safe side have a compression test run on all cylinders. It's a quick, easy and cheap way to find out if the head gasket is ok.

Also, I strongly advise you to get some second or third opinions for the remaining symptoms. Something smells fishy. I'm sure you know what I mean.

If you comment back or repost, I will do my best to help you out.
