Tring to install an alternator belt on a 1988 VW cabriolet. In order to install the alternator belt i have to remove the starter belt, which is on the outside pully. The alternator belt is on the inside pully and cannot slip over the outside starter belt without removing the starter belt first. My problem is finding all of the bolts on the starter in order to losen it and remove the starter belt. Ive replace several starters on american cars before, but never on a VW. Any suggestions you have will be very much appreciated. Fred

    Fred,

The starter does not have a belt attached. If there is another belt that has to be removed, then you need to look for a component that has one or more bolts that must be loosened and also an adjustment opposite from it, similar to how you loosened the alternator belt. Let me know if this helps.

The air conditioning compressor is driven by the crank and that drives tha alternator. you have to take off all the belts in order to change the alternator belt.

How to install rear struts on a 1988 vw cabriolet

From inside the trunk area, at the top of the wheel well, there is a back cover to remove, under the cover you'll find a 17mm nut, remove the nut and cupped washer, there should be 1 more 17mm nut to remove. Then from under the car, remove the thru bolt and nut. The strut should come out. take the old strut out and put the new one in.

Could be the ignition switch. They often go bad. It's mounted in the lock cylinder housing mounted to the column.

1988 VW cabriolet

You've probably just missed one or more bolts somewhere!
Look again real good and you should find it.
It may only be visible from under the car.
A set of non-metal car ramps is a great addition to any home mechanic!
Good Luck!
