Rear tail / brake lights not working

I discovered a few days ago that the break light on the drivers side was not working. I replaced the bulb with a 3157 per the owner's manual, but it still would not work. I pulled the same bulb from the passenger side to make sure it was a 3157 (which it was) and then replaced it. Last night I discovered that I had not tail lights or break lights on either side. The turn signals work and the flashers work. I've checked fuses, but can't find one that seems to be burned out. Any suggestions?

I tried bending the contact tabs several times and couldn't get them to work. Finally, I took it to a local mechanic and was told that the circuit boards needed to be replaced. This was probably a much more expensive fix than it should have been, but at least they are now working. Thanks for the comments.

I got pulled over last night because both of my tail lights were out, so I need to find that fuse fast.

Look up "fix jeep brake lights". I had a similar problem and just had to bend up the little metal contact tabs on the brake light assembly using a small flat head screwdriver-they were not contacting the bulb well. Took a whole five minutes and all is well.

Brake light and tail light on driver side not working

First make sure you have voltage at the tail light connection. If you do then check to make sure you have a good ground. Make sure the connections are clean. Check to see if the bulb is bad. It might have a bad connection. If no power at tail light then follow the wire to see if there is a bad spot in it.

Rear tail and brake lights out 97 Jetta

I believe this car has a bulb with two fillaments for side and brake lights, it is unlikely that they are both burnt out at the same time but possible. It is more likely that the bulb holder or a ground connection is rusted or loose. The fuse generally covers all rear lights.

2002 Toyota highlander passenger brake light not working

RE: 2002 Toyota Highlander 2.4cyl. 4X4 Base Model

I am a Certified Technician and have basic knowledge with electronics in electrical wiring. I searched the web and discovered this is a common problem.

I fixed the problem and it was a simple procedure... The problem is with the reverse light socket at the side with no brake light. This socket functions as a hub to direct current to the brake bulbs.

Remove reverse light socket and re-seat bulb. Check for loose or broken prongs. Replace if necessary.

Swap the reverse socket with the other side.

Tail break lights don't work. Window break light does work however. Bulbs have been replaced.

Check the brake light fuse. The high mounted brake light (third brake light) is on a different circuit than the brake lights. Hope this helps.

Rear tail / brake lights

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described concern indicates a loose ground particularly on the driver side. What is required is to check the connectors leading to the driver rear side and/or a ground wire. Often, the problem would be the ground terminal is loose or corroded leading to the body of the vehicle. A temporary workaround is to determine which is the ground in the bulb socket (always the body) and wire a jumper wire to any exposed metal part of the rear end.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Rear tail / brake lights

I had the same problem. Check the fuse to the brake light switch (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called). Chances are, that's blown and causing the lack of taillights. As for the single light going out, me and my dad just fiddled with the electrical contacts on the bulb housing until we got it to work. Basically just bent them up a little bit so we were sure that when the bulb was installed, it definitly made contact with the metal tabs. Sorry I can't be more specific.

99 mercury mystide had rear running light broken

If the driver's side tail light is working, it's not a fuse. Use a test light to check for power at the bulb holder. One terminal will be for tail light, the other for brake/turn light. If the is constant power for tail light, replace bulb. If no power, trace wiring from bulb holder to driver's side junction. Probable broken wire between the two tail lights.
