Engine surges and shuts down

I changed head gakets on my 3.3 dodge carivan... has been running very well till i ran out of gas.... put gas in, started and ran good for about 30 miles, engine felt as though it was running out of gas ...had plenty of gas... the engine will start but surges.. when i press gas it surges more and sounds like exhaust comming out of intake... im thinking cat converter may be clogged ...theres not much pressure comming out of tail pipe... am i correct in thinking this

When your running out of gas the dirt, grime, and gunk is all you have left except water and that may cause it to surge then slow down irrelevant to the gas pedal pressure.
I've had a similar problem when I ran out of gas
I would try a can of expensive fuel cleaner and a can of dry gas before anything else but that's just me!

My 2000 dodge intrepid ran out of gas and i put sum rite back in but it wont restart it sounds like it wants to but it dosent

Hi Roshed, Did you put enough gas in? If car is not on level surface,it could take 3-4 gallons to supply fuel pump, which is inside fuel tank. You can check whether pump is working or not by removing filler cap and listening for a 'whirring' sound when an assistant turns the key to ON not START, just off to on.if you can't hear anything, check fuel emergency shut off; a circuit breaker, usually in the trunk, behind the carpet on inner fender 'wall' see owners manual.Check for blown fuse. If you tried starting before realizing it was empty, fuel pump will probably need to be replaced,as the fuel 'lubricates' the pump, and they're quickly damaged if run dry.Good Luck

How do i change water pump on a 2007 dodge caliber 2.0?

Unless the water pump is leaking that is not the problem. You may have a leaking engine cylinder head gaket have it checked by a local shop.

My 1998 dodge caravan won't stay running. starts up but shuts down instantantly or when i take my foot off the gas pedal,

ok i have a 1998 durango with the 5.2L 318 engine. had trouble with a bad cell in my battery. I went out bought an optima red top battery for it 800cca. put it in and had same trouble. No start without putting foot on gas. wouldn't stay running without holding foot on gas. CPU has to relearn it's programming once you unplug it for long periods of time. mine was without power for about 2-3 weeks till i got new battery. Start with this.. first check under air filter make sure a squirrel hasn't made a mess under your air filter and it's clogging the air intake. Then pull off the lid to your injector cover ( the screw down lid coming from the air box ( with air filter in it) to "carb") make sure all your cables move freely. put that all back together and close hood. Start truck with foot slightly on gas pedal to get started. keep it at about 1k to 1500 rpm for about 1-2 minutes. Rev motor to about 2500rpm and let it die out if it will. Get out lock doors with key fob if you have it. if not make sure to lock doors. ( trust me it worked for me) let sit for 5 minutes. come back out and unlock door and relock door 3 times with fob ( if you have it ) or key if you don't have a fob. Then unlock it with the key and enter vehicle. Start truck as before and keep it around 1k to 1500 rpm again for about 30 seconds rev it up and should keep running. Mine did. I think the iac was stuck from sitting and has now since loosened up.
Good luck hope ti works for you.

2001 Dodge Ram Magnum 360 gas stalling also!

1.Start by changing plugs and wires. 2.Check for vacuum leaks. With the engine running, wigglr every hose you can see, to make sure nothing is loose or cracked. 3.Change fuel filter. 4.Check timing. 5.Check air control valve. 6.Check idle control sensor.

91 gmc idles rough and engine surges when driving

It maybe the fuel pressure rugulator inside the EFI Unit. Sorenson makes a rebuild kit with all the gaskets, screens and regulator for about $30. An EFI is the most simplest carb you can rebuild. Check the Hanes manual or U-Tube to see how.

Press gas pedal... sounds like exhaust coming out of intake

it might be a clogged car , but did you do the simple thing and remove the fuel filter and try to blow through it ?
