When cold starting the 1993 MB 200e (4 cy), the car has to warm up for about 2 mins before it is ready to drive. On initial crank, the car will stay started for about 15 seconds before cutting off. After the second crank, the car will stay started. If I push the accelerator, the car will spuddle and pop (not a back fire) and it sounds as if the choke (which there is not one) is on. Any suggestions or solutions?

Hi,
The early 300 SL suffered from dodgy HT leads and spark plugs if not regularly maintained, the problem with Mercedes Benz though is that the cars have so many features that it is almost impossible to diagnose without seeing the car. Some things to try (in this order) are : - Spark plugs, Ht leads, remove and clean Distributer Cap, replacement of HFM sensor (common fault), if none of these help then faults have been known in throttle valves and fuel pumps/filters
Happy fault finding

Dear FixYa Team,
I have the injectors clean up and replace fuel filter, but still it did not work. I think it's the intake valve is sticky, when I remove the injectors there were carbon inside the intake. Whenever I pump the accelerator intake start to back fire, after a few pump on it, engine gets better until it warm up then I can run the car with out that problem. Is it neccesary to correct this problem? If not it cost me a lot of money. Anyway thanks for the the suggestion, my car runs better than before. Limyukok

have u done a fuel pump pressure leakdown test? if not do one, the fuel pressure must stay within 5 PSI of the pressure at engine shut down for 24 hours, if it leaks down u will get a hard start and long cranking times, I suspect this is the problem but do the test, u will need a fuel pressure test guage (avail from Kragen auto), the test port is on the tiop of th engine in the fuel supply rail to the fuel injectors, looks like a metal tire valve.

I had a similar problem with my 1986 300e , which got progressively worse until the car was no longer driveable, I changed out the fuel pump relay and the problem went away.

cold start relay either the fuse in the relay, or the relay itself.
