I let it warm up this morning for about 15 minutes.. started driving and the temp gauge starting rising and then about 15 to 20 minutes down the road my truck died when i was at a stop light... about an hour later i went back and it started right up. did the thermosat stick or could i have done more damage by driving it with the temp gauge in the red?
Chevy's are pretty strong, but you really need to change that thermostate as soon as possible. if you want to check and see if that's what it really is. take the thermostate and put it in a pan of water on the stove. let the water start boiling for a minuete then take a fork and fish it out if it is working properly it will be open, if not it will still be closed. good-luck ray
Thermostat stuck, and temp relay shut down to protect engine.
Everyhing seems to be working properly except the thermostat.
Yes, tolerances in the engine are tight, so thermal expansion could have caused further damage to your cylinders or pistons ETC.
If this happens again before you have a chance to replace the thermostat... squeeze the upper radiator hose repeatedly and the thermostat may free up.
Reccomendation is replace the thermostat.
