My 96 nissan altima dies at idle

Engine dies at idle and runs rough at certain rpms. Have replaced fuel filter, spark pugs and wires, throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor and air filter.

There has been no check engine lights. Had it scanned too. The vehicle has 122,000 miles. Is there a way to test the idle air control valve? As I've replaced parts it would run well then next time mess up again.

By running well it would be that day of repair. The next day there would be problems off and on again

Could be a dirty throttle body, vac leak, or a defective idle air control valve. The computer adjusts idle speed by controlling the amount of air entering the throttle body via the control valve.
Is the check engine light on ?

You could unplug the valve when engine idle is above 1000 RPM. The check engine light will come on, but the valve would stay in place. If that takes care of the problem, the valve may be the problem. It has a small electric motor inside that opens and closes the valve.

I will try that tomorrow. Thanks!

SOURCE: 96 Nissan Maxima continues to have engine light

I had a similar problem - took it into 'Nissan Professionals' and they changed everything you did as well, and had no luck. After 4 or 5 times working on it, they told me that it was a 'loose wire' that had to be re-soddered and then the problem was fixed. I don't know where the wire was, but they made it sound like it was in or around the fuse panel under the hood.
I hope this might shed some light on the problem.

Sounds like a fuel pressure problem, either the pump or the filter among other things.

Nissan altima 1997 hesitate at stops, wants to die but still runs rpms fluctuate

My best guess is gonna be a vaccum leak... pick up a cheap can of carb cleaner. Start your car and listen for a whistle or something close. it will probly be near or behind the throttle body. take your carb cleaner and spray it with out the little red hose around the back coner on the driver side of the motor. you can visually inspect the area after you hear an increase the idle. if you dont find it there spray all around any where you see a hose. Hope it helps. a vaccum leak usually wont set a check engine light on OBD 1 cars. Good luck.

Engine idles rough at red lights begins loping rpms drop to almost killing, then cycles back to normal, then repeats rough idle drop in rpms and loping, back and forth until I rev engine or take off

You could have a clogged fuel filter, if you haven't changed it in awhile. You could have a leak in the intake system somwhere also. When you slow down, you get less power to the engine. It may need spark plugs and wires as well, if in need for a tune up.

My 1999 nissan maxima has a rough idle and some time dies at idle

It may be throttle position sensor or camshaft sensor. Most likely the throttle sensor.

My 2001 nissan altima feels like it isn't getting gas when I am idling. I had the fuel filter changed and it still wants to die on me. Do you know how to increase the rpms, so it will run higher when I am...

Hi Jerry,
Is the idle surging?? going up and down, while at idle?? and not beeing nice and smooth, or the RPM's just drop down and the car dies?? You don't want to touch any of the factory settings on the throttle chamber aka idle screw on the throttle body. That's factory set for life. You may have a IAC -AAC valve problem which a "air volume control valve". Buut let me know first, what you find as far as the "surging up/down goes", but it doesn't die.
