My 2000 beetle will start and run fine if the temperature is above 40 degrees F. but on cold mornings the starter will turn the engine over and the car will start and the immediately die. On subsequent attempts thr car will continue to do the same thing for ten to fifteen attempts. Starts then dies. I noticed when I turn the key on the fuel guage does not activate as if it does not get a signal.
After the weather warms up the car starts and runs fine. We only have one key right now, so it might be the key. No key codes come up on the dash Does this sound like a key transponder problem? Marc
There is a much richer fuel mixture during a cold start, the colder the engine the richer the fuel mixture
retarded ignition timing causing the fuel to burn for a longer period of time makes the engine heat up faster
anything that doesn't allow the mixture to be properly metered, like vacuum leaks, bad temperature sensors, or O2 sensors, MAF or MAP sensors, bad EGR valves or PCV valves hoses or tubes,
and or
anything that will cause the fuel mixture not to burn properly, like worn spark plugs, or any other ignition part, wires, cap, rotor, timing, compression, will cause poor start or no start conditions that are worse in lower temperatures,
also low voltage, week battery, slow cranking of the engine can also cause hard to start conditions
I was just reading the owners manual for my 2000 beetle and it says the diesel fuel has a problem with the wax separating from it below 40 degrees. Put the car in a warm garage and it will start.

Thanks for answering, my beetle is a gas model though. Anybody else have any ideas?
same issue here 2006 gas bug below 35 degrees will start then shut off after 2 seconds. above 35 will start and drive fine.
