You are probably right about the tensioner as there's no reason the timing belt should need changed that often unless the shop that replaced it didn't know what they were doing and didn't get the belt on correctly.

Hello. In 1997 the Sunfire used 2 different engines. A 2.4 overhead cam or a 2.2 overhead valve engine. Both use a timing chain setup. Hope this helps you along. Best of the season to you.
If you've never replaced the timing belt or chain,That would be my first thing I'd check is the Timing belt or chai, just aline the timing marks on crankshaft and then look at the position on the distributor to see if it's pointed in the #1 firing position .
