Need to know if a 2004 sunfire has timing belt or chai

It has a timing chain !

It's a timing chain.

You are probably right about the tensioner as there's no reason the timing belt should need changed that often unless the shop that replaced it didn't know what they were doing and didn't get the belt on correctly.

A 97 sunfire does not have a timing belt.Only a timing chain.94 and older sunbirds had timing belts.

In 1997 the Sunfire used 2 different engines.
A 2.4 overhead cam or a 2.2 overhead valve engine.
Both use a timing chain setup.

Timing CHAIN tensioner you mean? Better have that noise checked ASAP. It may be a problem with the timing chain.

2000 sunfire has a timing chain, and it is a tough task to replace!!

If you've never replaced the timing belt or chain,That would be my first thing I'd check is the Timing belt or chai, just aline the timing marks on crankshaft and then look at the position on the distributor to see if it's pointed in the #1 firing position .
