For a couple days I noticed my gear indicator wasn't displaying correctly. I would put in D but 3 would be showing. Put in R and is was not underlined as it should be. Plus reverse lights would be 20 second delay before coming on. Had trouble starting and replaced battery and alt. Now when turning key to start, the gear indicator moves quickly to 3rd gear on it's own preventing the engine to fully engage. Any ideas?
PRNDL Display
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the selected gear position as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the gear position. The PRNDL display blanks if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the transmission range switch circuit.
• The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the park position and the column park switch indicates a position other than park, open input.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
Could be the transmission range sensor . Testing would need to be done , hooking up a scan tool ! Doing electrical testing etc...

Hello;
Are you getting the check engine light? If so the electronics may have gone out. You may not need a rebuild but you won't know till you pull the oil pan on the transmission and inspect the contents. You may also have lost the neutral safety switch. It is mounted on the drivers side of the transmission. Check those out first and let me know what codes you get.
For Ponchoboy; the clunking and hissing you hear are teminal root causes. Drop the oil pan and if it has a lot of filings and metal it is time for a rebuild.
Hope this helps; Rate me highly;

I had that problem to last winter too. i took it to a shop and they told me it was the 4x4 switch. it is a common problem. I changed it and so far so good. It was an very easy fix. you just pop off the dash all the way around then you can take the switch out. there are two clips one on the top and one on the bottom. then all you half to do is un plug the wires and you are ready to put in the new one. it only cost me around $130.00 canadian.

there is a large evaporative leak. keep away form ottozoo, they dont have the brain power to actually diagnose a light bulb., their job is to sell parts., if they sell you the wrong parts tough.Take it to a qualified repair shop that does a lot of GM work or the dealer.

The problem is your ignition switch.It is located in the steering column.You have to remove the column covers to gain access to the switch.You don`t have to remove the steering wheel but some do to get better access.Buy the switch first so you know what it looks like and you know what to look for.After removal of the switch make sure that the plastic gears on the new switch line up the same as the old one.Also make sure that the shifter is in park before removing the switch.You should also disconnect the battery and wait a 1/2 hr.before you start.Be careful because the horn ring is going to make contact with the switch.You also have to be aware of static electricity because of the air bag inflator module on the steering wheel.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Start with fuel system. Listen for fuel pump humm at fuel tank No humm check wiring to pump for power. Then check for spark at plugs and wires. Remove wire from coil and hold near engine and see arch when you crank. No arch. Replace ignition Modular inside distributor cap or cap or rotor
