1997 Ford Explorer - I can hear it crank, but won't start

Every few weeks, I will try to start my car, you can hear it crank, but just won't start. The mechanics check all the codes and everything looks fine. New spark plugs, new wires, new fuel pump. Could it be the crank sensor or the ignition switch?? It happens when it gets warm outside, over 80 degrees.

Try tapping the crank sensor while someone turns the key on(dont try to start just turn key forward until the radio will come on) it should whirl when the key is turned, if not tap it then you should hear it whirl. then try to start.

SOURCE: Ford Explorer 97 - cranks but won't start sometimes

I don't see anywhere where you replaced the drive belt or the fuel filter it could be building up pressure in the fuel pump causing the sending unit to stick but before you do all this get a digital volt meter and check out the crank sensor I'm just asking because it has happened to me if you have a lot of keys on one key ring it can damage the ignition switch so check out the crank sensor and the ignition switch first

Check the exhaust compression. Remove the O2 sensors before the cataylic converts and see if it improves. If it does that means your cats are cloged and need to be replaced.

2001 ford taurus with the 3.0 after sitting a few hours when i go to start will crank and crank and crank for what seems like ever, will start easily after that but when i go to start it for the first time...

Its not the oil, increasing temperature will thin out the oil. If it cranks easily but won't start it could be the spark plugs or the spark plug wires. When they heat up, especially if they are old, they won't perform well. Pull off one of the wires and hold it close to the plug, try to crank the engine and look for a spark. If it sparks them try removing a plug and check to see if it looks wet. If its bone dry it might not be getting fuel.

MY 98 FORD EXPLORER CRANKS BUT DOES NOT TURN OVER. I HAVE POWER BUT MY VEHICLE WON'T START

You mean that the starter is turning (cranks) the engine but the engine won't start? Be sure it is getting fuel. Turn the key to the on position and you should hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank run for a few seconds. If so that is good. If the fuel is being delivered then possibly you have no spark which usually is the electronic ignition module. The only way to test it is to replace it. Your timing chain or belt could be broken or "jumped" as the third possibility. I am leaning toward ignition module being bad as they just die without warning and nothing can revive them.

1997 Ford Explorer SOHC Car intermittantly will not start. When started runs well. Car has been taken to reputable repair shop twice on a trailer with no resolution. They tested the fuel pump which showed...

I would still be thinking fuel pump. I had the same issues with a cadillac in the late 80's. The dealer had it a week. I did my own diagnostics, pulled the gas tank and installed a new pump. I assumed it bound up mechanically on occasion, and it was beyond most peoples thought process, to reason it out.

Won start low pressure on motor 50 psa

More info Please!! If the compression is 50psi, the motor is shot! However, you should be able to fire it up by pouring a cup of oil down the intake. It will smoke like mad for a few minutes! Frankster016
