Loud squealing from power steering pump - do I need new PS pump?

Upon start up the power steering pump belt squeals, it quiets down but squeals when I turn the wheel and if I accelerate hard the belt squeals again. I have replaced the belt but am unsure if the power steering pump needs replacing or if the cause is in the power steering rack. I have not noticed any significant leaks from the rack.

I do not think that is it. It made no noise for the first week or so that i owned the car. I replace and adjusted the belt tension. I did add Lucas power steering oil to stop minor seal leakage on the sterring rack. No leaks now but the noise instead.

I do not think it is belt tension. What else could cause the belt to squeal? The power steering pump is putting up a lot of resistance to turning therefore causing the belt to slip and squeal. Could the resistance to the PS pump turning be the steering rack's fault?

the stuck oil pressure relief valve theory makes a lot of sense. When I drive for a bit it almost completely goes away. It causes a lot of back pressure that the pump has to overcome resulting in squealing from the fanbelt. It would be a lot cheaper, and possibly easier to replace the valve first and see if it helps. Thanks!!!

Hi Norman,

Sounds like the adjustment may not be correct on the power steering belt, with the tension not being enough, after you replaced the belt ?

Try giving it a little more tension, and go from there.

Hope I have been of help.

Good Luck !

John.

    Hi Norman

Most unusual to be the steering rack, more the pump itself.

Is there any signs of frothing in the Power Steering Reservoir oil ?

Possibly the oil pressure relief valve on the pump is faulty, building up excess back pressure ?

Has the car ever been in an accident ?

    Let me know.

    Good Luck !

    John

How much is the PSO in the reservoir. If it's empty it will make the whistling and whining noise when you turn the wheel. I had first hand with my own car. All it needed was a top up and about 10 minutes drive

Hi! The pulley could be worn or the belt is not properly adjusted.Causing the belt not to grip the pulley but slide on it,creating a friction.

My car makes a loud squealing sound when i start it

Mary,

This type of problem is best checked by a trusted mechanic. I doubt you'd hear squealing noises from the crankshaft or harmonic balancer; but it is likely to be heard from a belt tensioner pulley, water pump (or other belt-driven devices under the hood - such as the alternator, power steering pump, etc.). A loose or slipping belt can also cause this noise.

Spraying WD-40 on the source of the squeal may quiet the sound - but not solve the problem that is causing it. By simply masking the problem with WD-40 instead of fixing it - you run the risk of the squealing part failing catastrophically - probably at the least desirable place and time.

For your own safety and convenience, have this problem checked and repaired properly.

Good luck!

Power steering doesnt work well when cold

Squealing means the PS belt is loose or frayed. Replace the belt and adjust the tension correctly. The "bouncing" is caused by the PS pump starting and stopping because the belt is loose.

Remove the belt and check those parts. Spin them by hand The alternator should spin freely. The PS pump will have more drag on it. Also check the tensioner and idler pulleys. When turning them Feel for roughness. All these should be smooth turning. No bumps or grinding. One of them is going to be tight or rough. The PS pump will move in and out a bit, this is normal.

excess mechanical drag from the pump can cause the belt to slip and squeal, but before focusing on the pump I'd check the condition, tension and alignment of the belt. I might even try cleaning all the pulleys with an aerosol brake cleaner and install a new belt, particularly if the current one has more than 50,000 miles on it. It might be that the squeal is coming from or caused by a different belt-driven accessory.
A more typical noise from a power-steering pump is a high-pitched whine, not a squeal. Usually, if the steering wheel is stationary, meaning that the steering rack is not "asking" for assistance from the high-pressure fluid from the pump, there's little or no noise

if you have to spay the belt to get it to stop then the belt is most likly streched or bad. take the belt off and turn all the free spinng pullys alt, power steering,a/c,ect if all spin good with no horible sounds then replace the belt , if any turn hard then this is what the problem is.but im betting it's the belt

The power steering pump is normally connected or driven by the engine with a V-belt. A loose belt can cause squealing as soon as the power steering come under load (e.g. steering left or right while stopped).

Check the tension on the V-belt directly connected to the power steering pump. This may need replacement.

Hoep this helps.
