Why do I only have heat when the car is driving

I start the car and let it idle. no heat coming out of the vents. When I drive, plenty of heat. If I stop and in park, no heat again?

Are you saying the air does not blow when the car is parked, or it switches from hot to cold ?
If it switches from hot to cold, it could be low on coolant, or a blend door may be faulty.

SOURCE: when driving the steering wheel

It's stalling on you. Like you just switch the car off.
A bad cam position sensor or crank position sensor can cause that without registering a computer code.have them checked

SOURCE: cannot remove key from ignition,

Try this....I know it sounds silly, but I had an old galaxy that did this same thing....

After you put the car in park, (I am guessing it is on the steering column), do NOT let the shifter go into it's "parked" position, but rather, leaving it in park, pull the shift lever toward you, but do NOT move it out of park. Kind of like you have to do when you are going to pull the shifter out of park, and into another gear, ya know? While holding the shifter in that position, NOW try to remove the keys. Did this work?

It is a Safety Switch, that some vehicles have. However, if the shifter never had the problem before, and suddenly, it is doing this, you may have a small broken part inside the steering column, that will not allow the ignition and steering components to LOCK.

Good Luck

No heat coming from the vents.

If it is a manual system--sounds like coolant low ie: air bubble in system. If it is ATC system, Check Codes, if no failure codes, coolant may be low--air bubble in system--most Durango's have air bleeders in system.

2007 pontiac torrent. Keeps over heating at idle but is fine when drive 50+ mph. My first thought is thermostat. Plenty of fluid in the cooling system. Any thoughts?

thermostat is a good place to start the other is make sure you cooling fans are coming on ,might be a fuse problem or a tempeture sensor that activate the fans , hope I got you on the right track .

Little heat coming out of vents.

IF YOU CAN'T FEEL THE AIR FLOW OUT BUT YOU HEAR THE BLOWER MOTOR WORKING, BEHIND THE GLOVE BOX IS A CABIN FILTER.REPLACE FILTER
IF YOU HAVE GOOD AIR FLOW BUT NO HEAT:
1;VACUUM LEAKING TO HEATER CONTROL
2;WATER PUMP GOING BAD / NOT CIRCULATING COOLANT,HIGH RPM/MORE COOLANT TO THE HEATER CORE
3;OPEN THERMOSTAT/ENGINE TEMPERATURE TO LOW
1;CHANGE THE DIRECTION FROM VENTS TO FLOUR TO WINDSHIELD. IF NOTHING HAPPEN IS THE VACUUM
2;RUN THE ENGINE INSIDE ON WARM PLACE ON IDLE.NOTE THE GAUGE IF PAS 1/2 TO 3/4. IF PAS 3/4 MARK REPLACE WATER PUMP
3;IF GAUGE STAY BELOW 1/2 REPLACE THERMOSTAT
GOOD LUCK

No heat while idling

I have had a similar situation myself and it was my heater core, on my vehicle it was a very time consuming job as i had to remove the entire dash to get to it. What you could try first if not tooo bad . Flush the system and reverse the hoses on the heater core and reverse flush. You can drive reversed for short time with the heater core hoses reversed as i did for over a week it may un plug if not as bad as mine was....Plenty of how tos on u tube to reverse flush your heater core and system.. I replaced my heater core radiator and water pump and a vent was broken in the dash i found and bad vacuum lines. a couple actuators were bad. had no heat to floor after doing all that it roasts me out of the truck, and the vents work properly including blowing on my feet the way i prefer.... Hopefully this helps you

I have a 2005 grand prix gt temp guage reads normal and heat is on and warm when start driving heat gets colder or if i change to defrost its cold air doeasnt stay hot car doesnt over heat though changed...

The heating coil is probably getting plugged up. You may have heat at idle or slow speeds, but once you get going, there is not enough coolant going through it to stay warm. Get the system flushed or replace the heating coil.

HEAT NOT WORKING WHEN IDLE

Sounds like you may have a thermostat stuck open. Try taking a piece of cardboard and placing it in front of the radiato. Don't block it completely, but just limit some of the airflow. See if this helps.

2004 Dodge Intrepid heater problem

This sounds like your automatic climate control is starting to malfunction. Check to make sure your coolant is full, and temp is not fluctuating, and when your vehicle is warmed up, try using the low setting and feel for air temp. Is it warmer than if you turn it up? When at idle the vehicle is not producing heat the same as if you are driving, putting load on your engine and more air/fuel combustion means more heat, which is why you can feel heat while driving. Ideally you should feel heat as soon as the engine is warming up, getting hotter as it reaches peak temp of 190-210 degrees. You can try to make sure your water control valve is not blocked, and all electrical connections are secure. This will be located close to your firewall and connected to the coolant tubes that run into your firewall to your heater-core. Also use recirc (setting)to try to summon as much heat as possible, however ultimately, you may need to take you vehicle in for service. If it only warms when driving defrost will be an issue. Good luck.
