It started with a burnt plastic smell coming from the car, my husband thought I had ran over a piece of plastic. Months went by and the smell remained. One day I was driving and started hearing a low humming sound coming from what sounded the back of the car. I turned the car off and then noise was gone. The noise kept randomly coming back then one day I was coming to a stop at a sign and the car lost power. The humming noise was present at the time of the car losing power. I waited for AAA to tow me to the mechanic. Apparently there was an ignition coil that was bad and it was replaced, I went on my merry way. Cut to last week, my son and I come out from shopping I go to start the car and it won't start! The oil and battery light come on when I tried to start it....Also, sounded like it wanted to start but did not. When I had been driving to the store the noise was present too. Had AAA tow me home. Next morning I went to see if the car would start and what do you know! Been running pretty good (*knock on wood!) still am smelling the smell and I get really nervous when I hear the humming....Anyone know what this could be?
Jennifer what type of timing belt does your engine use ?
Is it Nylon ? When was the last time you had it changed ?
Burning plastic smell may be being caused by the timing belt bearing runners seizing and the belt is getting hot .
If the belt is due to snap you could cause a lot of damage to the engine if it breaks.
Might be worth getting a mechanics advice on this as a possible cause

You Ultimately will need to Get it Rebuilt. But, For now it will be fine, Just Keep listening for the Ping and Check the Oil Continuously. Until you can afford to get it Rebuilt.

sound like the distrubutor has gone bad. very common. smell gas means that there is no spark to burn the gas. they are no cheap. best to have a shop do it. there is 3 different kind of dist. best of luck.
SOURCE: BAD ENGINE NOISE RIGHT AFTER REPLACING TIMING BELT AND WATER PUMP
if poor performance was noticed right off the bat, the timing belt is not timed properly. this will cause lack of power, rough idle, pre ignition(little noisey), and rich exhaust.youre going to need to first, find a friend or someone whom you trust to do your automotive work.second youre going to need to start over by tearing it all down systematically and taking note of anything done wrong. third find reliable information on the timing marks for this vehicle. i hope for your sake nothing is broken. let me know how this turns out, ill be happy to help further if you need.

Its indication towards faulty fuel pump. The pump has low pressure. Its taking time to flow fuel to the engine.---------As
per your problem mentioned, it indicates the problem with fuel
pressure.-------- The fuel pressure is low.---------- First thing you can do is
get the fuel pressure checked, this will confirm the problem. --------- If the
pressure checked low that means problem is with faulty pump and clogged fuel
filter. -------- But if pressure checked ok, then fuel pump relay has to be checked. The relay is actually not faulty, sometimes relay gets hot and stops functioning. So it may show proper voltage if checked by meter. You try bypassing the relay with a jumper and checked. If the car, starts runs properly , that means relay is faulty. After you by pass the relay, drive the car few miles then wait for 10 minutes, then again start the car, if it starts that means relay is the issue.Replace the relay. The fuel pump relay located in engine compartment fuse box under the hood.-------------
But if problem is same as before after by passing the relay, then relay is not the issue.---------- If the fuel pressure is checked ok, then other possibility is
faulty o2 sensor and crank sensor. The o2 sensors are
before and after catalytic converter.-------Both the sensors are to be replaced.------
And as per you mentioned your problem, its quite possible that faulty o2 sensor
will cause this problem.------ O2 sensor is the part which sends signal to ECM(
the cars computer). It sends signal to computer about fuel / air mixture. How and
when to send fuel to engine.--------- If o2 sends stops sending signal to cars
computer then it will not send the fuel to engine.------- In your case the o2
sensor is getting overheated and this is stopping the o2 sensor from sending
signal to ECM.But when your car shuts off the sensor gets cool and again it starts
working.------ So as per problem, get both the o2 sensors checked and
replaced.---------- Also get the crank sensor checked.------------- Also get the throttle body and IAC
valve cleaned.------ The idle air control valve is also located at throttle body.Clean
both throttle body and IAC valve with throttle cleaner.--------This will
help.Thanks.Helpmech.
