I have a 2000 Golf TDI and while driving to work this morn. the glow plug symbol started flashing and when I pressed the gas pedal it would not go or engine would not rev up. The engine was still running and I could only go about 5 mph. So I got off the interstate and shut engine off and restarted with the problem seemingly fixed but the glow plug symbol still flashing so I drove it back home @ 20 miles. What could be the problem? The glow plug symbol flashing? Would it be safe to drive to repair shop?

2002 VW Golf TDI - Live in northern ontario - -20's with wind chill. When I first drove the car this morning - error code (looks like a clock) on upper right portion of speedometer gauge. Just flashes on ...

Classic 109 relay failure.

Relay is for the Glow Plug system.

This relay provides the power to all of a TDI's engine-based electronics.

If the glow plug light comes on intermittently by itself, check your brake lights too.

A burned-out bulb will cause the glow plug indicator light to come on. Sometimes flashing is caused by a bad Brake Lamp Switch on the Brake Pedal. It was updated for free by VW .

If you can see it under the knee panel, the Brake Lamp Switch body should be Metallic Green....if it is Purple or Black it need updated.

I have a vw bora 1.9 tdi and the heater plug light has started flashing and the car says engine workshop

There are a number of different causes of this problem. Check all glow plugs. Check glow plug relay. If both are ok....This may seem unusual...Check the brake light switch situated at brake pedal. A faulty brake light switch will cause the glow plug light to flash
Good luck with it

Glow light flashes

Correct - the glow light flashing is an indication that there is fault. Often this is associated with a blown brake bulb or faulty brake switch.

Glowplug light on my golf tdi

Hi Andy,
Remarkably, this problem is often associated with a faulty brake light switch down at the pedal!
It happened to my '97 Sharan the other day whilst driving along, and the merest tap on the brake pedal with my left foot stopped the glow plug light flashing.

Posh folk sometimes replace the switch; I would suggest checking the connecting wires down there first :-)

Hope this helps you a bit. If it does, a "Fixya" rating would be much appreciated. If it doesn't
help you, I'd be grateful if you didn't bother with a rating at present - they can't be increased later if I do manage to solve your problem! Just come back and tell me what you found. Cheers, D
