94 Altima Transmission Issues

Well my wife was on her way home from work when she started loosing momentum on the highway. She pulled over to find a couple of puddles of oil under the car. When I got there, the car started up fine but there was transmission fluid pouring from a lil spout coming form the tranny. I found a hose that had come free from the spout and put it back on, but the car does not move when shifted into any gear. What do you think my first step should be?

Fill with transmission oil, if it is an auto the oil level has to be right before it will work

The car starts to move very slowly and looses power easily while driving on the highways.

Sounds like clutch is slipping. If you accelerate and it does not respond I would say clutch assembly is bad.

The car struggles to move and starts slowly but then gains momentum and it is quick. It looses power easily while driving on the highways.

no
I don't think that it is the "clash" what ever that is
Assuming that you are referring to the clutch
I would be looking at replacing the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder or the clutch cable as that is generally when clutch problems originate

Transmission Issue. I have a 2005 Altima SE-R, 3.5L, auto trany. The transmission jerks, sometimes quite hard, while downshifting between 2nd and 1st usually when coming off the highway onto an off ramp...

This can be caused by a number of things, like a dirty transmission filter, sticky solenoid valve, or worn out transmission fluid. I would recommend that you change the fluid and filter as this should resolve the issue. Seafoam makes a transmission treatment that will not harm your transmission, is compatible with all fluid types, and resolves issues such as the one that you are experiencing. I would recommend that you use a can of it when you have your fluid and filter changed. Most people never change their transmission's fluid, and this is a major mistake, it would be the just like not changing your engine oil, causing premature damage. Transmissions do not require that you change the fluid as often as the engine oil, but nevertheless it is a fluid and does break down after extended periods of use.

Lacks power in highway hills

Hi,

I am assuming that you have no issues with the engine whatsoever, then the only possible areas to check would be:
1. axle gear ratio - to my knowledge a Wrangler would be 4.11 while some Cherokees could be anywhere from 3.54-4.88;
2. flywheel - a lighter flywheel could cause the engine to loose easily its momentum hence difficulty on an a rise.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
