Been working on this problem for 6 mounths. the truck will start up and run great. then other times it wont start. then somtimes if you pump the gas like a crazy monkey it will start running vary ruff and smoke until you hit 3000 rpm then it runs like a scaldid dog soon as the rpms come down its ruff again. other times you hit the key it starts right up somtimes it will shut off after a min or 2 then somtimes it runs like new!!!

sound very much like a vacuum leak.... also maybe your timing is off? possibly advanced? try retarding it with the distributor if thats the case...
SOURCE: my rpms wont go over 3000 on my 94 toyota 4 runner.
the V6 has a rev limiter in gear that keeps it under this in first gear. put the tranny in Power mode if it's an automatic. it will **** more gas, however.
SOURCE: is there a thermostat shut off switch . car runs
The amount that it gets hot is a clue but theres no shut off switch. It's possible that the car is over heating and the temp gauge does'nt have enought water over it to report the problem. once the cooling system is cleared as it's full circulating and the fan will come on when it's hot ( disconnect the temp. switch on the therostate cover on the top of the transmission, ( the stat is in the lower hose ) with it disconnected and the key on the fan should be on and connected f till it's real hot. The crank senser or distrubutor module can can too hot and shut down too

It sounds like the mass airflow sensor that sits over your air cleaner
