Voltage Regulator Does anyone know if the voltage regulator is on the inside or seperate from the alternator in my 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo?

It would be more cheaper to buy a new car than to try and fix the car that is broken. Both the alternator and the voltage regulator need to be replaced for your car.

The Voltage regulator is built into the alternator. Meaning it's inside the alternator. As far as I know, it's replaceable. I know it is on GM products for I replaced many, but haven't done a Chrysler product regulator. Nonetheless, the alternator has to come off and be dismantled, but it isn't a hard project to do. Regulators are not that expensive, it's cheaper than renewing the complete alternator.

The voltage on the vehicle is regulated by the "Voltage Regulator" inside the alternator. There is no need to change the complete alternator, just the regulator.

The voltage regulator is in the PCM. If there is a problem with it, the PCM has to be replaced.

How can the Alt and Battery be good, but not charging? The Voltage Regulator is inside the alternator. Keep out of the Parts Store and take it to a shop and have it checked on the truck. you may have wiring issues.

yes. you will need to know the engine size for the exact location. it is usually on the passenger side firewall.

The problem sounds intermittent, if you put volt meter on the battery while it is at that 19volt mark/reading(on the gauge cluster) you will be able to see if it is true. If your alternator is really charging over 16volts the lights should be getting brighter then usual and/or they are burning out. Find out ASAP, if the alternator has a defective voltage regulator, it needs to be replaced. Prolong use will damage components.

it's in the alternator,the easiest way to fix it is to replace the alternator.
