Cant hear fuel pump when really cold and wont start

Car cranks but won't start. when temp rises some, can hear fuel pump and car starts and runs fine

  • Anonymous Dec 13, 2012

One note to add, when ever I here the fuel pump, the car starts every time. If I don't here the pump, it wont start. Only happens once in a while and only when it is really cold.

I think I would try a new fuel pump relay. If it works, should be a cheap fix. If dealer's price is outrageous, try Napa or even a used one.

SOURCE: Car runs smoothe when cold, heats up spits & sputters

It could be one of two thing's, first idle-air bypass valve located on the throttle body ( Follow the hose up from the air filter, it goe's to the throttle body ) the idle-air bypass valve is bolted to the throttle body with two I believe 8mm bolt's, with one electrical connector going to it. The next could be the MAP sensor located under the hood upper passenger side of the fire wall this is also held in place with two 8mm bolt's and has one vacuum line going to it, hope this help's you.

SOURCE: I have a 1992 Lincoln Mark vii lsc. Fuel pump problem!

This sounds like the PCM has taken a turn for the worst. The pcm relay sends power to the fuel relay for 2 seconds to prime the fuel system just before start up.
Then the pcm ungrouds the signal for a prove out.

SOURCE: 1998 Lincoln Town Car cranks but does not start.

possible just not probable. you need to see if there is any pressure to fuel rail. if not youre going to have to by pass the fuel pump and see if it is getting voltage. if so then apply a seperate voltage and ground wire to the pump to see if it kicks on. come to think of it, it could be the PATS system(security) that shuts down the system. it will crank but will not fire. your ford dealer will need to reprogram the system.

SOURCE: car wont start when hot

I have a 95 that had the same problem. After the dealer replaced most of the engine, it turned out to be a Power train module relay that cost about seven dollars. Your problem might be different, but it seems the relays get hot and will have to cool down before they allow the engine to start.

Won`t start when cold

No such thing on your car.
The temp sensor tells the computer what the engine coolant temp is.
If it were faulty you would get a check engine light.
I would have the fuel pressure checked before and after you crank the engine. The pump relay provides power to the pump when you turn the key on to recover some of the lost fuel pressure after the car sits. The one way valve in the pump is supposed to prevent the pressure from dropping.
If the fuel pressure drops to zero it could take some time to crank the engine enough to get it back up.

Done cars have a kill switch if they are low on oil. Check your oil. If the oil is good, it may be the ignition switch.

2002 saturn sl won't start, turn over but won't start

If the engine fires up for a second or two with starting fluid then the fuel pump is weak.I would check the fuel pressure and if its not within the specs then replace the pump and filter.

Its cold and engine will crank but wont start, could the fuel pump went out ?

It could be the fuel pump, but try the battery first, it is less expensive and if that's not the problem you can normally take it back. Then maybe try tune-up if you have not had one recently. These are least expensive options as opposed to replacing a fuel pump.
