How do you change the tie rods on a 1997 dodge intrepid 3.3 liter?

  • Kiernyn Dec 14, 2010

The socket you will need is a 7/8th, and if I were you, I would use a hexagonal socket, works best. Don't know the torque.

What is torque settings on 2004 intrepid rack and pinion center bolts at inside mounting where rubber bushings are held at inside location ... opposite end of outside tie rods arms

This is torque spec for different bolt sizes. Hopefully the bolt size will get you in the ball park. Starting with 1/4 inch bolt, those are ft lbs. Note the bolt size--grade-- and thread. My database doesn't have that spec. I'll keep looking.

I also have a 1995 Dodge Intrepid with bad tie rods; I have purchased the parts, but I am having trouble removing the INNER tie rods. There is something preventing me from putting a wrench on the bolt

There is a special tool to remove inner tie rod. You usually can rent this from a Autozone parts store. When you return the tool, they give you back 100% your money as long as you don't damage the tool.
It consists of a long pipe with a open end wrench at the end.

I need to replace the alternator on my 1999 dodge intrepid. is this something i can do myself?

that is not a problem follow the steps below
Instructions
Things You'll Need: New alternator Belt tension gauge Socket wrench set Torque wrench 1 Determine which alternator your Dodge Intrepid will need. You'll want to be sure the new alternator is compatible with your Intrepid's engine. Models produced after 1997 are equipped with a 2.7 L EER, 3.2 L or 3.5 L EGJ engine. 2 Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and remove the lower plastic splash shield. Drain the transmission fluid and disconnect the lower radiator support. 3 Loosen the "T" bolt, pivot bolt and drive belt adjusting bolt with a socket wrench but do not remove them. This will allow you to disconnect the drive belt. 4 Loosen the terminal nut for the alternator so you can remove the B+ wire. Disconnect the circuit plug for the alternator and remove the pivot bolt, using care not to lose the spacer. Remove the mounting bolts and the alternator assembly. 5 Install the new alternator assembly by reversing the removal procedure. Tighten the terminal nut on the alternator to 89 inch pounds with a torque wrench. Use a belt tension gauge and socket wrench to torque the "T" bolt until the tension on the drive belt is 120 lbs. for a used belt and 180 to 200 lbs. for a new belt. 6 Use a torque wrench to torque the pivot bolt and 10mm mounting bolt to 40 foot pounds. Torque the 8mm mounting bolt to 30 foot pounds.

Need to know the size of the socket needed to remove the front hubs on a dodge ram 3500 1 ton 4 x 4 with cummins engine?

Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut Nut is to be removed from tie rod end using the following procedure, hold tie rod end stud with a 11/32 socket while loosening and removing nut with wrench Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut
Remove the tie rod end from steering knuckle arm, using Remover, Special Tool MB-991113 Tie Rod End Removal From Steering Knuckle .
Remove the upper ball joint stud from the steering knuckle using Puller, Special Tool, C3894-A Ball Joint Stud .----------------------- The procedure is :-- Do NOT pound on the outside of the hub. First you will need a 5 inch long half inch drive socket extension. Start the 4 hub bolts about half way, then witha helper hold the extension between one of the 4 bolts and the axle housing then have the helper turn the steering wheel to push on the bolt and hub. If it is really rusted in you might have to start the truck to get more pressure on it while turning. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Tie rod

No. Go to Napa, get the bushing repair kit. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. Remove the air inlet tube. Should be 2 7/8" bolts retaining the inner tie rod ends. Loosen both. Remove one at a time, replace bushing with kit. Use some synthetic brake grease on the bushings. I recommend Napa sylglide. Replace the bolt, but do not tighten all the way. Do the other the same way. Tightnen both bolts, reinstall the air inlet tube, get vehicle aligned.

Tie rods

I did this on a 2002 Intrepid, and found that it wasn't too complicated. I replaced the bushings only, rather than the tie rod end. You can get bushing replacement kits where the bushing is in two pieces and doesn't have to be pressed in. Before starting, turn the steering all the way to the right, then remove the intake air ducting. The rack and pinion assembly should be easily accessible now. BE SURE AND REPLACE ONLY ONE TIE ROD BUSHING AT A TIME. If you take both bolts out at the same time, you may have a very hard time getting all the sleeves, etc. aligned in the steering unit so you can get the bolt back in the proper hole.
