  • Anonymous Dec 18, 2012

Tried to pull transmission codes/no luck. It seems like the computer system and the transmission are not communicating properly

SOURCE: 1993 Saturn SL2 will not shift into highway gear

Saturn says and I quote

there transmission fluid is not to be changed after the first change at 6000 miles.

Now I say it should be changed at every 30000 miles. If changing out the fluid doesn't work then you need to go to a transmission repair shop.

SOURCE: Jerks going into 3rd Gear

You the beginnings of what is known as the reverse slam. If caught early enough it is fixable. However, most times a rebuilt valve body is in order. I do it for around $200. For the record any late 1992-2002 valve body will work, those are the type II. Type I won't work and is 1992-early 1992 years.

SOURCE: 1999 saturn sl2 transmission wont shift from 1st gear

Your valve body and possibly input shaft nut need to be replaced. The valve body's booster valve is worn down and won't create pressure. Before it went completely out it slammed on the input shaft nut and loosened it.

You need to replace the valve body and retorque the input shaft nut. The transmission is not junk. The above needs to be replaced and change the filter and fluid and do it every 20K miles.

I have a 2000 Saturn sl2 and The right front motor mount was broke right down the middle and I replaced with oem part and it seemed to help quit a bit but still shifting hard what is wrong you think .

most engines have 3 or 4 engine mounts and if one had failed the others will be close behind. Misalignment of the engine to the shifting operation will lock levers or jam cables.

There are 4 motor mounts on the engine. You found the top mount. The bottom mount on that side is a dog bone and is right under the crankshaft pulley. The bottom mount is on the other side in about the same place. The drivers side top mount is another dog bone and is under the battery box. For best results, change all four of them at once, and make sure to buy a GM original mount for the top one. The knockoff mounts just aren't as smooth and durable as the real thing. Believe me on this one, the huge difference is well worth the few extra bucks. 25315433-zejmo41uy3tce5x43qikgza0-5-0.jpg

Saturn sl2 2000

While the hood is open. Rn the engine with a helper operating the gas pedal and e-brake locked. Place the car in D and then R while you are watching the engine from the side. Have the helper step on the gas in each of the gears and watch what happens to the engine. If the engine jumps around,, then you have other mounts that are broken and need replacing.

99 Saturn SL2 gears

Hello
You will need to have an experienced technical drive this before attempting any repairs, but my gut feeling is that you will need to rebuilt the transmission. That takes many special tools and a high degree of skill and training and is not something that really can be done at home with common hand tools.

How do you remove the transmission from a 1998 saturn sl2 without removing the whole motor

You have to remove the tire, all the brake and suspension parts, and the engine mount. This will allow you to get proper access to the transmission and will allow you to remove the transmission. That is why it is easier to remove the the engine tranny and all.

Transmission problems

I have a 97 SL2 and it has the typical slam into reverse, but also after a couple minutes of driving it downshifts... It stays there for like 3-5 minutes then runs fine afterwards... What is the problem?

My 2001 Saturn SL1 no longer goes in reverse, it only revs but does not catch. It is also starting to slip between first and second gear. About how much will a new transmission cost?

Sounds like this is an automatic s-series. Sounds like you previously had a reverse slam in the car. Meaning when you put it in reverse it would delay then slam. As this gets worse it begins to untorque what is known as the input shaft nut. Eventually this nut will get so loose that you lose reverse completely.

The transmission itself is fine and does not need replacement. $1,600-$2,200 is probably not even what the car is worth. The valve body needs to be changed out with a rebuilt one and the input shaft nut needs to be replaced and torqued down properly. Both of these are easily done by any backyard mechanic. Roughly 3 hours will have your transmission shifting like new.

I rebuild Saturn valve bodies (check my ad for more information) and provide instructions on how to do the repair. It costs much less than what any shop will tell you and they'll tell you the transmission is toast...IT IS NOT!

Any questions, just let me know.

2002 Saturn SL1 - Losing reverse and second gear

The simple answer is that there are two loose nuts in the transmission.

The output shaft nuts are loose. The are behind a cover that you can see through the driver's side wheel well.
