SOURCE: How to replace a neutral safety switch

The switch should be on the drivers side of the tranny where the shift linkage attaches to it. You will need a 13mm socket and a 15 mm socket . You will also need a heat gun , the electrical plug is glued into the connectors and must be warmed up to be removed . these rarly go bad but they do get out of adjustment / or when removing pan techs are ad to bend the shift cable bracket and get them out of adjustment . Loosen the two 13mm bolts and move it slightly in both directions and see if this fixs you problem before you change it out.

My 02 chevy Silverado wont start.

Yes, that is literally the sole purpose for the neutral safety switch. To prevent the vehicle from starting in gear. If the neutral safety switch is malfunctioning, there is a very good change that the vehicle will not crank.

Is this a neutral safety switch problem?

A bad neutral safety switch would not allow you to start the car at all. This sounds like a shift linkage problem . good luck

2001 jgc limited has good battery power turn key to start and dash lights all go out engine wont start headlights dont even dim had the yellow fuse cradle out it had 2 10 amp fuses in it after that this...

A mechanic would check for power at the starter and trace back to the key switch. There is a neutral safety switch to keep you from starting the engine in gear that could have failed.

97 chevy s10 wont start

Then the problem is likely the ignition switch, or the neutral safety switch. Try jamming it into park a couple of times to see if it helps. If it does, you will need to change the neutral safety. If it doesnt, probably going to need an ignition switch. Those trucks, jimmys, and blazers are famous for ignition switch problems.

Starting

Sounds like the safety neutral switch may be defective. If it gets out of adjustment or fails completely, the car will not start. Sorry, I would have to look at it to know, but some are located on the transmission and some are at the gear shift. Have the switch checked to insure the right voltage is getting to it. If the switch thinks it's in a gear other than park or neutral it will not start or turn over.

My 1997 monte carlo wont start

Most likely a bad starter.
Less likely a wiring problem.

My car wont move out of park and the braks lights arent working.

my ford taurus did this to me too.... your car wont move out of park because it might be the neutral safety switch because your brake light connector piece might have come undone...
now first off the brakes (my switch was above my brake pedal) and just make sure its clipped in and then your neutral safety switch should go of and you can put it into gear.
if you cant find the brake thing to see if its unplugged just turn your key slightly on before all your dash lights come on and put the car into neutral and then start your car and you can put it into gear.
