Speedometer intermittent and ABS/Brake light stays on

We have a 1998 Dodge Ram Van 1500. The speedometer started working intermittently. Sometimes it won't go past 30 mph and then sometimes it will just starts working normally. Also, the ABS & brake lights stay on. We had the brakes, hoses and calipers replaced, lights are still on.

Vehicle speed sensor located on top of the rear diff at the brake line clamp a single bolt with a wiring harness. replacement from NAPA comes with a new extension harness. use grease on the terminals before assembly.

It sounds like it is the speedometer cable that goes from the speedometer gauge to the transmission is wearing out.unless you have done one of these before then i would suggest having someone do it for you.

Gauge lights

ABS and Brake warning lights intermittent may be caused by a failing wheel speed sensor(ABS Sensor) and /or its connector. You may have one on each wheel hub(4WD) or if 2WD, a sensor may be on the rear axle differential center.

Transmission doesnt shift abs & brake light on speedometer doesnt work

I had the same problem with ABS light and speedometer, I was told that it is the transmission control module. It has not yet stopped shifting but I have had times where it just wont stay running. It will start and then stall. Hope this helps.

04 dodge ram 5.7 hemi. Gauges going crazy an sometimes go dead. abs and brake light is on. when parked and running, press brake pedal and speedometer wich is already bouncing, goes up. wipers wont work,...

The first place I would do is check the battery cables, both ends, then check that the body to engine ground cable is intact. Back in the 70s and 80s, Volkswagen Rabbits, Audi Foxes, used a negative cable that ran from the battery to the left fender to the engine. Every once in a while, one came in on the hook or limped it with an intermittent body accessory problem, or frozen speedometer or throttle or clutch cable. In every case, somebody had replaced the negative battery cable with a conventional cable so there was no body ground connection except through the throttle, speedo or clutch cable. these could not carry the body current demand and eventually melted or welded into the cable casing.

Abs brake lights come on and stay on

Replace the speed sensor in the rear end.

Random lights coming on in the dash and stalling occasionally

See if you can find out if there is a code for the check engine lite and the abs, those can be related if the speed sensor located on the top of the rear axle is intermittantly failing. That sensor sends the speed signal to the pcm and the abs controler witch will also turn off the cruise control.
