The D4 light blinking indicates there is a diagnostic trouble code stored. When a malfunction occurs, the vehicle computer records the code and stores it,then flashes the D4 light to let you KNOW there is a problem. On pre OBD 2 Honda vehicles,1995 and back,Hondas are manual code read, which means you do NOT hook up a scan tool as there is no scan port. The passenger side front kick panel is removed, and a blue 2 wire connector located.Use a jumper wire to short out the connector, then turn the ignition key on,with engine off,not running. This throws the computer into self diagnostic mode, and the D4 or "s" light will flash a series of flashes. The flashes have to be counted, and written down. For example,2 flashes followed by 4 flashes would be a code 24.The code is then looked up with reference material for a description and diagnostic route.Every diagnostic trouble code, has a diagnostic route, for repairing the problem.Again, this informtion, the diagnostic route,is available in reference material from pay sources like All Data Online. After the repair is made, the battery is disconnected to clear the code.Good luck.

Hi there. Although the Dealer has changed the oil, did they do a 'Stall Test' whilst the gearbox was cold and again when at normal running temperture? If not, that's what they must do firstly. This will identify whether you have a slipping clutch/s. The Honda autobox also includes what is known as accumulators - these control how each clutch is engaged during acceleration. For example, if you are accelerating slighly/smoothly, you want each gear to be engaged gently and smoothly, whereas, when accelerating hard, you need the gear engaged quickly and hard to aviod clutch slippage. Thus, the fact that you are experiencing a hard engagement might mean that an accumulator/s is seized. If that's the case, it will mean that the autobox will need stripping, cleaning and be checked for worn components. Hope this helps, Scottech.

Theres a transmission cooling sensor and somtimes the wire comes loose from other repairs being done around it. or its just out. its on the left side sitting on the tranny. THATS WHY your d4 light is blinking

This is involved. When the D4 light blinks, it is indicating a problem with the input or output systems for the A/T. If you find your Service Check Connector (it should be near or at the top of the kick panel on the passenger's side; it's usually blue and has two holes in it; it is at the end of a wire so don't look for a fixed unit; it is often simply tucked in behind the top of the kick panel. You should pull the kick panel out to find it) you can insert a paper clip so that it connects the two holes. Then, if you turn your ignition to ON II (do not start the car) the D4 light will blink out a code, using both long and short blinks. The blinks have to be carefully counted. Problem codes 1 through 9 care indicated by short blinks. Problem codes 10 through 15 are indicated by a series of long and short blinks (you have to add them together to get the code).

I tell you all this to indicate that the procedure is fairly involved, and since you probably don't have a list of what the codes mean, I would have to say that it would be best to find, if you can, a Honda dealer to read the codes and check your transmission. Most of these problems are connector or sensor related and are usually indicated by the transmission not shifting from one gear to another, or by the transmission jerking hard when it shifts. If your having no problems and you are in a position to not have access to a Honda service department, you can find the backup radio fuse in your engine compartment fuse box and take it out(not with the car running) for 10 seconds or so, then put it back. It will clear the computer. If the D4 starts blinking again, it would indicate that the warning was not just a glitch.
I really hope that this is helpful; I'm sorry if it is only disheartening.

D4 light blinking hard to take off wont shift for 1993 honda prelude

The blinking light does mean there is a problem with the transmission. You may need an import shop that specializes in Hondas to look at it since most shops won't have the equipment and books to troubleshoot it.

I have a 1997 prelude that started shifting gears really weird and the d4 light started blinking now the check engine light is on and the car will not go in drive at all. could it be a sylanoid or a map...

First things first. Check the fluid level and condition. (Honda's are always checked engine off, sitting level.) If the fluid is burnt/stinky and dark, you may have internal a/t issues. Next step would be pull the codes. You're gonna have a P0700 code under the engine list. That is the generic trans system failure code. Your scan tool will need to be able to read all powertrain systems, not just engine data. If it has a specific code for, say one of the shift solenoids, or the linear solenoid, you may be able to replace parts/fluid and be ok. If it has a P0730, or P0740 code, then you're looking at internal clutch pack failure, and a reman. or good used trans. Good luck.

Car started having trouble going into gear then d4 light started blinking

d4 light indicates electronic transmission failure but this can b as simple as low transmission or old fluid . change fluid if its dark or watery, before you panic.(( use only honda brand atf,)) if that doesnt work the codes need to b considered this can b done by jumping the two pin connector under or behind the glovebox with a paper clip the d4 light will flash once you turn the ignition on to first position' when dash lights first come on . it will flash then stop then flash again you need to count the first and second separately this will give you 2 diget code look it up exp; honda d4 dtc 34 just say google it , but if i were to guess if not the trans fluid the codes will b for sift selinoids easy fix but no fun to change. good luck. you will need a scanner for the check engine light uncommon for both to show up at the same time two diffrent systems ,disconnect the battery for 30second this will reset the ecm, it maybe a false code and it may not return.

The D4 light keeps blinking and when this happens the trainny doesnt shift right. I have diconnected the battery, this did work, but did it again after about 3 times driving it.

When the shift lever is in Park, is the D4 light on, or blinking? If the D4 light is on steady, while the shift lever is in Park, chances are your transmission computer has taken a dump on you. If the D4 light is blinking while the shift lever is in Park, the computer has stored a code, that will give you some idea where to look for the problem. Here is a link describing how to retrieve the codes. Good luck.

Speedometer an check engine lights

Try to find the speedo-cable from the firewall down the the transmission. Usually on auto trannys the speedo head (the signal generator which is a gear basicly) is located on the top of the tranny, of course attached to the speedo cable. If it's a 'drive by wire' car and there's no cable - it will require more investigation.
