SOURCE: 97 Monte carlo is overheating.

If the thermostat is sticking closed you can maybe tap the housing with a hammer or other tool while it is running, it may cause it to open up and you will see the temp going down on the gauge. As I recall the thermostat is at the front, within easy reach, so you could go ahead and take the thermostat out, reassemble and see if you still have a problem. For testing it won't hurt anything to run without it, just make sure to replace it with a new one if it's bad. There's also your waterpump and possibly a fan clutch. If it has electric fan make sure they are coming on, if not maybe the fan itself or possibly relays can be bad. Please rate this. Thanks and good luck.

Have you unhooked the battery since you put the freon in? If not, do it.

SOURCE: at idle car runs hot, but when driving it cools down.

Is the heater working ok if not it may be airlocked need's bled. WHen it heat's up so quickly then the only other thing is a faulty thermostat stuck closed. It may also be the radiator but unlikely because It should take longer than 5 minutes for it to overheat.

Correct. When trans is fully hot (about 15 min. driving, or since you can't drive, about 20 min. idle time) with engine running in park, fill until level with mark labeled "Hot".

the thermo fan's won't start or the gauge won't read at all depending on what you mean by therm sensor. They should feel hot and tight. Running temp is 80-90 deg C on standard street vehicles and cooling system pressure should be around 15 psi

I just purchased a 1999 Cadillac Eldorado, ETC with a 4.6L V-8 Northstar engine. My engine keeps blowing out the engine coolant through the over-flow hose when I stop at a light or if I let the car idle...

It may be overfilled. Do you keep adding coolant when it blows it out? The reservoir has a line to which the coolant should be filled. If overfilled it will blow out when hot. Other reasons may be that the fan that cools the radiator may not be cycling on and off to keep it cool. Also check the small belt on the right front side of the engine that is under a plastic cover that runs the water pump. It sometimes breaks and the water pump stops turning.

Idling burning oil fast

It sounds like your Torque Converter is bad as far as the car not staying running when put into gear, The purpose of a Torque Converter is to allow the engine to Idle while in gear. As far as burning oil, i couldnt honestly say i know.
