My daughter left the headlights on all day while she was at work, and when she came out the car wouldn't start. She tried jumping it with 2 different cars ( it has a new battery, 30 days old), but it doesn't even make a sound. We decided it was the kill switch as the remote does not operate anything, and only the brake lights and horn will work. We did try pressing the switch under the dash while the ignition was turned on, as well as pushing ti 5 times, still nothing. How can we reset this?

  • hondo73mdh Jan 14, 2009

Afraid that didn't work; got it charged all night, put it back in, nothing. Pressed alarm reset and held for 5 seconds, still nothing. Gave up and getting it towed to the dealer.

    Thanks for trying!

Check the ignition switch and the fusable link.
also your fuel pump is going out. there might be a check valve in the pump that is becoming faulty. otherwise its battery problem .just replace the battery and check out for getting the exact fault.

Hi

This seems to be a somewhat common problem (search for intermittent starting problem), which i've had many times, including last week. I've had battery cables, clamps, ignition switches, and keys replaced over the 5-6 times i've brought it in for the issue. This week was the first time they've actually replicated the issue though.

They found a dead spot on the commutator? within the starter motor. Replacing starter motor & solenoid switch. Hopefully should solve it for good. We'll see. I pick it up tomorrow.

As many times as i've dealt with this, i finally traded communications with BMWNA to see if they had anything documented (TSB or SIB etc) but not much came of that. However they did call my dealer which i think got their *** in line.

U are not supplying enough info to help, is this an aftermarket alarm or is there some kind of factory security system? since factory systems don't have a button under the dash I will assume it is aftermarket, with the model number it makes it really hard to offer any useful info, I would recommend u disconnect the alarm and restore the factory wiring.

That means that the battery has gone, replace the battery.

If you still have problems after battery replacement , a mechanic must test that there is power coming from the alternator and charging the battery.

Unhook the battery for eight hours. While it is unhooked, put it on a charger and make sure it gets fully charged. This should be enough time for the system to reset. Good Luck!

Hi there
Turn the ignition switch OFF, and remove the No. 13 CLOCK BACKUP fuse (7.5 amp) from the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box for 10 seconds. Also check all the other fuses and try again

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya

Volkswagen Jetta won't start.

Sounds like you have a weak battery, or possibly a bad alternator. The fact that you were able to drive it for 2 days before it died again leads me to believe that it is most likely the battery. You can test the battery by looking at voltage across the terminals when you try to start the car, if it\'s less than 12 volts your battery needs to be replaced. If your battery is more than 5 years old it should be replaced anyway. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I would start by making sure the battery is good and nithing was left on and drained the battery, check and see if the headlight come on and are bright, if the lights are dim or dont turn on then the battery is low, also check the connections at the battery, make sure they are clean and tight. you can try to jump start it if battery is low. if the battery is good then you may have a bad starter or a problem with the antitheft system, again start with the battery, make sure inside ;ight are working and check the headlights. good day.

the 12 amp is for a jump start and the 2 amp is for a trickle charge which doesn't degrade the battery. i believe you have a loose connection either a loose ground cable or the positive cable to the starter check these and tighten if neccessary
