My speedometer jumps a lot. I think it is the speedometer cable.
You will have to pull the dash trim plate and the instrument cluster to disconnect the cable from the speedometer. You will also have to disconnect the other cable end from the speed sensor gear in the transmission and fish it through the firewall. If the cable is not broken or bent, you can lubricate it and re-use it. I am not entirely familiar with the '85 and earlier Toronados, but it was the last of a long line of older technologies. Beginning with the '86 model year, the Toronado was a completely different car, and the speedometer was all electronic (no cable.)
