you have too unlock the alarm by turning one of the door locks try them all even the hatch as they are all different

petrol or diesel vehicle ? does the engine turn over ?

Your problem is probably the temperature sensor. It can be found on the intake manifold, below the thermostat housing.

Hey I have a 96 grand Cherokee aswell I had the same prob. When you turn the key to the on position does the dash light say your out of gas but you know your not? If so it's your crank shaft position sensor a $60 part it's located above the tran so youll have to lower not drop it to get to it. Shouldn't take more than 30 mins to do hope I was able to help an good luck
