I have a 1997 mazda protege with a coolinf fan prob. The fans work when I turn on the AC but do not work when the engine gets hot at idleing speeds. I replaced radiator and thermastate and also cooling sensor. The 30 amp cooling fuse is good. so my question is , Does the cooling fan relay control the fans for both AC and overheating too?

No, the fans have separate relays. You have to use the wiring diagram to sort it out. The pcm turns on the cooling fan relay with a ground signal on a purple/black wire when the temp sensor signal rises too high.

SOURCE: 1997 Mazda Protege: Engine has clicking noise when idling.

Check to see if the valve lifters are not making the noise. Turn on the engine and rev it up to about 1500 rpms and see if the clicking is coming from the valve cover area.

SOURCE: 2001 mazda mpv overheating both fans at not working PLEASE HELP!!

Ive noticed this in a couple different series of MPVs. I have had several of the earlier generation MPVs and theres lots of sensors on these things. If one of those sensors goes bad, then the others will not work correctly. Check your manual and see if there are any additional sensors you have not checked. Also there is a site that I used to get help with my MPVs. Its www.mpvclub.com and there may be a fix listed there. These guys specialize in MPVs. Although your relays may be working, they may not be receiving a signal from the correct sensor. Also from a little research it would appear that the cooling fans themselves have a tendancy to stop working. There are several people that are saying that they are wiring their fans to run manually. The AC fan seems to be the first to go and then the main fan. Try hooking the fans up to direct power and make sure the fans are not bad. Hope this helps...

SOURCE: Possible solution to engine overheating

So if you cant find it, how do you know its bad? The relays are on the RF fender, above the wheel, under the hood. The electrical diagrams lists 3 relays. They are all powered by the ENG fuse and its a 15 amp fuse. The fan is powered by the COOLING FAN fuse 30 amps. Power to the fan motor is on a BLUE/BLACK, BLUE/YELLOW and BLUE/RED wires, of course the BLACK wire is ground. Its a 2 speed fan. I would check for power to the fan motor first as with a car this old, the fan motor is usually worn out. If it does have power to it,m rap on the moto,r if it attempts to wrok, the motor is worn out.

SOURCE: 2003 Protege 5 overheating on long runs.

I just replaced the radiator and thermostat on my 03. The radiator was defective (corroded) on the lip where the cap seals. This allowed coolant to be spat out. The thermostat was also sticking closed after new radiator and this caused overheating. Replace both while in there for under $100 if doing it yourself.

The fans are a DC motor & will run in either direction

So you can't do anything wrong

One terminal goes to a wire from the battery positive,
the other you ground anywhere you like,as long as
it's metal

I have a 1997 mazda protege LX . I am suspecting

use a test light and probe the wires .some fans don't work both at the same time so it maybe necessary to let the car reach operating temp to see if there is power and ground to the fans.

My cooling fan doesnt come on when car is hot. not over heating but runs hotter than should. whats wrong

there is a switch located in the engine that turns on the fan. it may be faulty. the fan motor itself may be faulty. if you run power & ground directly to the fan motor connector it should run. if it doesn't replace it.

You probably have a bad fan switch. I had the same issue and had it diagnosed and replaced. It fixed the problem, but it seems to be coming back less than 2 years later.

Where is coolinf fan switch located on 2004 pontiac sunfire

It's inside the computer.

Turn the AC on. If the fan still does not turn on then you may have a fan relay or computer issue.

Also if the engine does not get hot enough the fan will not turn on. You may have a defective temp sensor or thermostat

I have a 1997 Mazda Protege with over 300,000 miles on it and it idles rough and the temp gauge is going to hot then coming back to normal without any coolant leaks. can any one help here?

is the coolant reservoir bubbling while engine is running??? if so, two things may be going on, 1st, one of the 2 cooling fans may not be working properly, usually the a/c condenser fan goes bad causing an intermediate over-heat and if the bubbling in the reservoir is happening then you now have a external leak in the cylinder head gasket from the over-heating causing a rough idle at times...you will need to have the head gasket replaced hope this helps.

My mazda 2002 protege is running hot when ac is on

your car temp is hot because the air-con automatic fan/cooler on the condenser is not functioning. check the electrical connections from the switch as well as from the compressor. otherwise check the thermostat. the fan should run when the aircon is switched on.

AC fan working intermittently

Check the fan blower resistor mounted in the under dash blower case. Mazda had pretty well designed systems and are user friendly. The resistors are a fairly common issue. Make sure also that the drain on your ac unit is draining out when the ac is on. They can fill up and cause some weird probs. check also that the carpet under the pass side dash is not wet. If so, you have a drain that is clogged or is leaking back int the dash floor. There is a repair for that also.

2001 Mazda Protege cooling fan or thermostat

I am realizing that the cooling fan in this car is very important. It has two in case you didn't notice. The driver side fan motor is bad in mine and the only result is poor air conditioner performance in stop and go traffic. It's fine at high speeds. I would think the thermostat is likely the culprit in your case, but if the fans are not working at all, you should get those replaced. The motors may be bad in both, which could definitely cause overheating. I've been researching prices and you should be able to get the parts for less than $100 each and installation is just a couple of bolts on each assembly.
