The fuel gauge in the fuel tank is simply a float connected to a bar connected to the sensor. Take a look at that and see if that float is stuck in one place causing a false reading.

It is possible. Next time it happens fill the tank completely, take note of the amount of fuel pumped. Look in your owners manual for tank capacity. If you lost manual they are available on line free.
Loosen the pickup box mounting to frame bolts.Remove all driver side bolts and lift/tilt driver side of box high enough to access fuel pump sender unit easily.Remove fuel pump assembly unit and cycle float while watching fuel gauge.Should be as simple as adding a little more pressure on the fuel gauge sliding contacts on the fuel pump assembly.
This job should take about 1 hour.
Always lift the box when changing pick up fuel pump assembles as it is faster and easier than dropping fuel tanks.
Depending on your year it could be a weak lift pump not being able to lift the fuel to the injection pump, in which case the injection pump will be quickly damaged as it relies on a steady flow of fuel to lubricate and cool it.
on older models there may be a break in the pickup line inside the tank. Suggest you keep tank above quarter full at all times until you decide what to do..replace lift pump or remove tank and check pickup......
You may have cooked the fuel pump. Or the gauge may be off. I would check fuel pressure with a gauge and make sure you have gas in the tank. Anything less than a quarter of a tank is rough on the pump. It needs liquid gasoline to keep cool and lubed.
its probably the gauge in the tank if they put the pump in and not moved the wiring when fitting it get court on the float so does not move, had this before, but if it been like this for a year i would remove the gauge as its not been moving about to keep the resistance board clean so would need to be cleaned up, oil spray and a cotton bud should clean it up ok with out damaging the board.
The most likely problem is the sender unit in the tank is stuck.
Sender units are relatively cheap and easy to change.
Autozone probably carry them on the shelf.
yes ,i changed the whole 9 yards
Did you replace the entire fuel pump and sending unit ?
