I have a 98 Honda Accord and recently changed the timing belt, water pump, all seales, tensioner and belts. The car was quiet before all this but now it has a whining sound, more so when you press the gas pedal. Besides that the car drives fine. It's a standard shift but the whining sound is that of a automatic transmission whining. I now have 120, 000 miles on it, what could be causing this whining noise?
Hello
altho new you may have a whining water pump or tensioner or it may be over tensioned.
take a long screw driver & place in on the timing cover to try to here where the noise is coming from, this should help you find the proplem with the car

Hello
If the mechanic told you it was the timing belt making the noise and it would stop after a while, Then pepboys should stand by & do the repair free of charge as the items fitted are fulity. The 90 day warranty by Pepboys means not a thing if the car left them makind a noise, So Pepboys are responsible for replacing this, without charge?.
You must remenber the Customer is alway right it not take it up with the head office of pepboys.

Hello
Im glad that there are being some what helpful,
What you need to do with the screw driver is put as close to the water pump as you can get, then put your ear to the end of the screw driver then move it to diffarant places on the timming cover to see it the nosie is the pump for sure.

I have not done the screw driver thing yet but it does make sense that it would be the water pump, even though new, because I brought the car back to fix the noise and the tensioner was replaced, still the noise, so I guess I need to try to the water pump now. When I first got the car back the mechanic told me it was the timing belt making the noise and it would stop after a while, not the case. The 90 day warranty is up and I had it done at Pepboys, shouldn't Pepboys be responsible for replacing this, without charge? If I had known it was the pump from day one surely I would have had it replaced.
Thanks for the info, I will stop by today and see what they are going to do about it.
Hey Paul, I stopped by Pepboys and they pretty much say they would honor the work they did and replace the pump but if it turns out the noise is still there I would be responsible for the labor charge which is a hefty $350.00. How does the screw driver test work? Am I suppose to exert pressure on the cover with the screw driver over the cover and if it gets louder that's the source? Just want to make sure I don't throw away this money. I really do think it's the water pump because the car was quiet before belts, water pump, seals, and tensioner got changed. The mechanic at Pepboys was trying to convince me that water pumps don't make noise, they just leak when bad. I told him a mechanic who knows his stuff told me otherwise. If you don't mind just kind of explain the screw driver test, and thank you.
