Check the fuel pump. It should come on for a brief moment when you turn the key to on. You should hear a brief buzz or whine from the tank, pressurizing the fuel lines. If you don't hear it turning on and then quickly shutting off, the pump may have failed or power is not reaching the pump.
You would need a voltmeter or testlight to check for power to the pump at the fuel tank electrical connector. Probe the fuel pump wire for power (when you have determined which wire is for the pump) while the engine is cranking. The pump should be running when the engine is cranking.. If no voltmeter or testlight, you could try hot wiring the pump with a spare battery set close by. Point is, you need to know if the pump has power to it before you go to the trouble of removing the gas tank to replace the pump.
Of course, if you have a fuel pressure gauge, it is simple to check the pump operation. If you have correct pressure, pump is good. If no pressure or very low, either the pump is failing or the fuel filter is plugged.
Can't remember if your '88 has throttle body injection or multi-port injection. If TBI, the fuel pressure should be kinda low-about 18-20 psi. On multi-port injection the pressure is much higher-on the order of 40-50 psi.
One more thing: If the pump isn't working, sometimes you can get it to turn on a time or two by just rapping pretty solid on the bottom of the gas tank. Seen it happen more than once, just not always effective.
If it is getting gas, next thing would be to check for spark.

SOURCE: 1998 buick regal, wont idle

It seems like it needs the idle control position sensor or the camshaft or crankshaft position sensors. Take to autoparts store for free scan for trouble code.

SOURCE: 1991 buick regal starting and running problem

Sounds like your car is overheating. If you have a temp gauge it should show that. If you just have an idiot light, by the time it comes on it's already too hot to operate. AFTER the car is cooled down, open the radiator cap to see how much coolant has been lost. Chances are there is alot missing. Add WATER (no sense in adding coolant if it's going to leak out) and idle the car at home. Look underneath as it warms up to find where the leak is.

SOURCE: I have a 1999 Buick Regal ls car run out of gas

A couple of possibilities. 1st, check to see that the fuel pump is working. When you turn the key to on position (not all the way to crank the engine over), can you hear the pump? You should hear a humming sound from the gas tank . The fuel in the tank actually keeps the fuel pump from overheating. It is possible the pump is shot. It would be a good idea to change the fuel filter, as it may be plugged up from sediment from the bottom of the tank.

SOURCE: buick regal 92 3.8L Horrible fuel mileage

Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

A few problems with my 92 buick regal. 1. Doesn't always start on the first try and I have to give it some gas when I turn the key. 2. Courtesy lights and chime won't turn off when key is ou

The no start on the first try could be low fuel pressure. The check valve in the pump may be letting fuel drain back into the tank, or the pump relay may be bad. The pump gets power from the relay when you turn the key on, then from the oil pressure switch once the engine starts.

Sounds like a relay or coil failing.
To proceed you would need to find out if you are loosing spark to the plugs or fuel pressure to the injectors when it won't start.

This question needs more detail. Consider trying to fill your Buick's tank by first putting gas into one of those red plastic gasoline containers. and poring from the red container into the car. Otherwise, bring your car to a mechanic.
