You have to remove side pan looking at 5 to 6 hour job.be sure buy new side pan gasket.also let the dealership parts department salesperson show you a diagram of shift valve location because more than one in the valve body.

Depends on the transmission - in a 4T65E (common to Impalas of that age) the pressure control solenoid (PCS) is the common culprit for rough shifting. It is a big job to replace. Took me 8 hrs. Its under the side cover. You have to separate subframe from transmission and main body to get at all bolts. Make sure you get a new PCS from a Chev dealer... too big a job to put a cheap one in. You-tube has some videos on how to do.
