1993 chevy s-10 starter problems

This truck starts when it wants. I put a new ignition switch, neutral safety switch, battery in it and it still starts sometimes and dosen't other times. I removed the starter to replace and had it tested, and it was fine. When it dosen't start I can arc of the two posts on the starter and it fires right up. I was wondering if it has a fuseable link going to the starter. I didn't see one when i pulled it but it is in there so tight and i really couldn't see. If any one has any ideas it would help.

Check the ends of the battery cable hooking to the starter and make sure it is clean also make sure the battery cable is clean inside and tight to the battery. If that is ok then change the battery cable to the starter, the positive cable. Make sure before you change the cable that the solenoid for the starter is ok, because if you can short the post out then you are getting power to the starter and the solenoid may be shorting out.

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is faulty. Slamming the shifter into Park has temporarily solved the condition for some, but the switch may have to be replaced.

SOURCE: starting problem, starter doesn't enguage. good starter, battery, celinoid, ignition lock, flex plate.

Have you chk. the starter switch on the steering colume under dash? Or is starter drive kicking in but not engaging teeth in flexplate? If its not engaging teeth on flexplate starter needs to be shimmed, or if its missing the teeth altogether on flexplate or bearly catching the teeth, top of starter nose wear it bolts up needs to be filed down to engage the teeth on flexplate.

I have a 1993 gmc sonoma, put a new ecm in it but it willn't tern over, lights will com on tho an if i cros the starter the plugs wont fiyer

The problem is in the start circuit if the starter won't engage from the key. From battery to ignition switch to neutral park safety switch to starter relay to starter solenoid to starter to ground and back to battery-lights come on so switch is good, next check the neutral safety switch for power in and power out.
Once you get the start circuit working so starter engages from the key, then you can address the ignition circuit for possible no spark.

2004 chevy tahoe won't turnover or start by being jumped

The ignition start circuit is the path from the ignition key in cranking mode to the solenoid on the starter. The path travels through a starter relay and a neutral safety switch before it reaches the starter.
This must be the circuit not working on your car.Make sure battery and starter connections are tight.Check for power at the starter solenoid terminal with a testlight when someone turns key to crank. If you have power there, they sold you a defective starter. If you have no power there then it could be the relay or the neutral safety switch.

Hi, what you would need to do is check the ignition switch to see if it is passing power to the start wire. If it is, then the wire from the ignition switch to the park/neutral switch is bad. You can trace the wire up to the ignition switch from the park/neutral switch. It's bolted to the side of the column and is not hard to swap out. Cost is only $10.

I have a 93 pathfinder SE 4X4 automatic transmission that had full power, new starter and battery. Sometimes it will start and sometimes not. By passed starter relay by adding push button start and it started 6-8 times then nothing. I finally figured out that it was the neutral safety or inhibitor switch on the 4 wheel drive shifter. Just an idea..good luck

How to check the ignition switch?

There are some fusible links mounted with the starter on the cable, check to see if they are burned into, pull on them they will pull apart like taffy. Also, check the neutral safety switch ,try in neutral ,see if it will start.Make sure the negative battery cable is good, this can cause the problem also, see if there is 12 volts on the purple wire on the starter solenoid when starting the engine,if not, check the neutral safety switch,if it is good, replace the ignition switch.

New starter.new battery.all electrical works lights, gauges, radio, wipers etc but van wont start.no cranking sound just slight click uinder washer reservoir behind battery

there is not just one thing that can cause this problem. it could be in the ignition switch, it could be the wiring from switch to starter relay, could be the neutral safety switch. i can tell you a quick and dirty way to test this, have to be careful if you do it. put the vehicle in park, make sure it's in park, otherwise it will roll when you do this and you could get run over by your own vehicle. now you will need a set of jumper cables. make sure you can get to the hot side terminal of starter, one jumper cable contact has to go there. the other side has to go to hot (positive) side of battery. if when you tap the jumper cable to the hot side of starter the starter cranks just like it should then you have a wiring problem. if that's the result you get try jiggling the gear selector around and cranking ignition, or try starting it in neutral. if that makes a difference, if it cranks in neutral or if you move gear selector around when it's in park, then you probably have a bad neutral safety switch. if that doesn't make a difference but you are able to get it to crank by jumping straight from battery to starter then you have a wiring problem in ignition system. hope that helps

Wiring Diagram 1998 Chevy S-10 starter replacement

The starter has one large cable from the battery positive, and a wire that goes to the solenoid (Part of the starter) that becomes hot when the key ignition is turned to start. This also passes through the neutral safety switch. (So it wont start in gear) Not sure if this is what you need, a little vague.
