Hood latch cable is not working--hood is closed

If the hood of your vehicle is stuck and will not release from the latch, there could be several possible causes. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

Use some wd40 and spray in the latch assembly,now get a screw driver and manually pull/pivot the hood release cable back,now put a new extra spring on the pull cable arm on the latch assembly after you have loosened the latch cable parts in the latch,now spray more wd40 in the latch.
This is the fix 90% of the time.

check the cable that runs from the passenger compartment out to the hood. if it is stuck pulled out the it will hold the latch in released position. look down at the latch and you will see the cable . use a screw driver to work the cable and see if it is working freely. if not replace it and happy motoring.. another thing ot check if it is working properly is the latch adjustment. if it somehow got pushed down it wont be able to close around the hood bar and hold it. you should hear that click when it closes. simple fix is to loosen the bolts and raise it up a little and tighten it back up.

Check out the cable connection between the latch and your internal latch control. Till you locate the problem I would suggest tying down the hood with some sort of strap so it does not pop open at speed.

lube the latch mechanism and with a screw driver try to lock the latch. if it latches then you need to loosen the latch and move it up. if it doesnt lock make sure where the cable pulls on the latch popped back in. if the lock where the cable is popped back in and it still wont latch it maybe worn out and needs replaced

the hood latch is out of adjustment loosen three bolts and pry latch up retighten bolts also check cable isnt stuck in the open position spray with lube

Try spraying the latch mechanism with WD-40 or similar light oil and operating the release cable a number of times. Check the condition of the release cable if nothing happens. The latch itself may have a broken spring due to the low temps.

i'd check the hood latch,it could have been pushed down and not locking onto the hood latch,look at the bolts on the latch see if it has moved down,if so loosen and raise it up ,test it to make sure it is still latching

Cable is sticking, look at hood latch and push down on the thin cable. It will allow the hood to shut. my 96 Accord does the same thing.

Hrmm. Have you taken the whole latch assembly off ? If not there is a black cover over the assembly which has about 6 screws on it that is also connected to th fan shroud, then after that it's only 2 bolts to undo I believe they are 5/8ths socket, dont quote me. My 97 just had the same problem I popped the hood one day and then it didnt close again. So after taking the assembly out there are 2 springs one that is for after the hood is popped to just open it up that is a big spring about 2 1/2 inches or so. Theres another one at the bottom though that actually keeps the hood latched down on my truck it was rusted and snapped in half. I went to the ford dealer said I had to buy a whole new assembly 25$ plus 2 days wait, I went to home depot in the hardware section found a pack of springs that contain (2) 2 1/2" inch springs and (2) 1 1/2" for 4 dollars used the small one to replace it now I have back up for both. Hopefully this is your problem cause it's cheap and easy to fix just open it up. Let me know if this is it.
